I never had much use for Gregg Rolie, being a fan of post-Departure Journey. GRINGO changed all that. The moving, orchestrated synth-sound may be passe, but GRINGO is the zenith of that style. Bob Marlette's vision is given clear focus by Rolie's songwriting and classic vocal style. (Coincidentally(?), Neal Schon also collaborated with Marlette the following year for his tentative LATE NITE opus.) However, it is Rolie who fully exploits the talent that is Marlette, as songs like "Hands of Time" entwine themselves in the subconscious after a few listens. The dreamy, Peter Gabriel-like "I Couldn't Lie to You" is worth the price of admission alone. A few guest appearances by the aforementioned Schon add some welcome spice to the proceedings as the album winds down. A gem of an album, long overdue on CD.

Gregg Rolie is one of the most underrated of all of the rockers. His work with Santana produced the best Santana sessions ever. His later work on Abraxas Pool demonstrated what Santana has been missing ever since. This album is not the best of Greg Rolie but it is a very good effort and the addition of Carlos Santana and Neal Schon make it the best of Gregg's solo efforts, before or after.

This disc as a whole is average, but Fire at Night features Carlos Santana and Neal Schon dueling guitar solo's. This one song makes the this CD priceless.
