I have been a auto collision tech and painter for over twentyfive years. I have really never been able to make myself happy with the results os a rotary buffer. The dual action design makes all the difference in the world. I took the handle off mine, because it was so different from what I am used to. It is so smooth the handle is not even needed. Very high quality. I would rate this a pros tool. I would suggest watching the enclosed video and a few on you tube if you are new to machine buffing. I think you'll love the results. I should also add that all three of my cars are black and there's no tougher color to make look right.

while it's true that you can get polishers like this for less money, and likely also true that you can work magic with them, I have to say that I am consistently pleased with Griot's. When I got this latest toy, I thought it looked a bit too much like an "in-house" creation and not so much what I would expect from a "professional tool" as it's advertised. That feeling lasted about 15 minutes, the time it took to unpackage it and start my play time. I have this, and the 3" inch and I've done more amazing work on two cars in the last week than I think I've done in years.

Pros:
Works as advertised, EASY to control!!! EASY to maintain, change pads, etc. OH, and definitely use their polish, it washes out with water and no mess. I had black rubber mess all over my pads in addition to the polish and it came out with running water.
Balanced and natural
Comes with instructions that really deliver what they promise to. So many times you buy stuff that comes with a "perfect world" scenario in the instructions that you just can't seem to replicate, well, not Griot's. What they did on the videos is exactly what I did in real life.

Complete so far: (using #3 polish, yellow pads, orange pads, and rubber restore
1999 Camaro Z28 HEAVY hood and door sill oxidation and clear coat breakdown- Solved with like new appearance
Same car, fully oxidized headlights, full restored to the point that I don't need to buy new ones.....clear and clean.
Same car, window and door exterior rubber welt/weather stripping, oxidized, partially pasty white and appearance of deteoration: fully restored with light sheen and factory appearance
Same car, window quarter panel: discolored and faded: fully restored and shiny. T-top roof bands, swirled and discolored: fully restored and glossy

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Factory orange peel: straight as an arrow
Bumper fascia front and rear: faded/discolored: cleaned with yellow pads and restored with #3 polish.

2008 350z:
Mild surface swirls: gone

Bottom line:
I've spent a bunch of money on their products, and each time I get one, I end up going back and buying more to "try" and have thus far not been disappointed. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, TAKE YOUR TIME, and have a blast watching magic happen.

I've just finished a four-hour session of polishing and waxing with this product. My previous buffer was a $20 10" model common at Sears and Wal-Mart. That one had no trouble with wax, but didn't have the power to apply any sort of abrasive. This one is another story entirely. It has something like 7 speed levels. On speed 5, I can't push hard enough to significantly slow the motor. The orbital action is much, much faster, and it provided quick results with Meguiar's M105 compound.

It's also a fairly industrial product. Build quality is higher than my Porter Cable cordless tools. I ran it for twenty minutes at a time with short breaks. It heated up a bit, but didn't stop, slow down, or make untoward sounds. Lake Country 6.5" pads have the perfect amount of overhang.

A few caveats: it's noisy. There's a high-pitched overtone to the motor sound akin to a circular saw that had me reaching for earplugs. It's not hugely objectionable and you could probably do without, but prudence never hurts. The power switch is finicky to turn off. The speed switch is recessed into the back of the unit and requires you to stop what you're doing to adjust it. It really should be on right side of the unit where your hand would be.

All that said, I consider this the best random orbital polisher in this price class. It's significantly more powerful (7 amps) than the Porter Cable 7424XP (4.5 amps) or Meguiar's DA (4.2 amps) and has a lifetime warranty. This Griot is periodically on sale for $100 or less; make a deal alert on Slickdeals with the word 'Orbital' and you'll eventually find one of the three for a song.

UPDATE:

Combined with a hook-and-loop bristle pad and basic cleaning solution, this is an incredible carpet-cleaning machine. I've also used it with a heavy cutting compound to clean a tub.

This polisher works excellent! The only suggestion is that the backing plate should be a 5" plate, because the outer edges of the current backing plate eat into the pad which deteriorates them quickly. As a detailer at a car dealership, I would not recommend any other dual action polisher within this price range!

After struggling with inexpensive buffers that don't work well and vibrate your arms off, I finally plunked down the $$ to buy this polisher. I really wish I had done so years ago. The machine makes all the difference in the world. The polish pads are easy to change and easy to wash if you use the Griots products. I'm using this on an airplane and I managed to do a whole wing in pretty short order. The machine is a little heavy compared to the cheap buffers, but that's a good thing because it feels solid and doesn't vibrate annoyingly. The odd thing is that with my small hands I could not turn on the switch with my right thumb when holding the unit with my right hand. A little inconvenient but it also avoids inadvertent activation, which may be intentional? I watched the video and went with machine polish #3 on the orange pad, and one-step sealant on the red pad. I was starting with 17 year old paint on an airplane that is outside 100% of it's life in coastal California. I thought the paint was truly a goner but I decided that a coating of sealant might prevent further deterioration. I washed, dried, clay bar-ed, machine polish #3, & final coat of one-step sealant. I was stunned by the result. All the oxidation was gone, the color was revived, and the surface is smooth and shiny. I never would have believed it since I had tried many cleaner waxes, etc. by hand and it never seemed to help. I am really impressed with Griot's products so far!

I had my polisher for several years and suddenly a piece inside broke, rendering it useless. I found the broken part and called Griot's to see if I could just buy that part (knowing that it was unlikely). They then reminded me that there was a lifetime warranty on the polisher and had me return it to them. After a few weeks they sent me a brand new updated version and once again, I love it.

The buffer is amazing. Powerful with a solid feel. My car has never been looked this good. Make sure you do some research and get the right product to maximize the capabilities of the machine.

Got a great deal on this with Amazon's "Lightning Deals."

The 25' cord seemed like it wasn't a big deal but now that I've used it, I don't see how I could live without it. It provides plenty of slack for me to make my way around the whole car without an extension cord or anything.

We have a total of 6 cars at home and washing them was enough of a task in and of itself. I picked this up to help me wax/polish all of the cars more quickly. The polisher feels firm and sturdy - it makes quick work of the dreaded wax job.

Make sure to pick up some waxing / polishing pads - because they aren't included. Then all you'll need is your favorite wax and your good to go!

Very easy to use. Spent a few hours detailing my 2007 nighthawk black Honda F-it with it. Looked better than new!Got out most of the swirls and got a nice deep shine to the vehicle. Too bad the Honda paint swirls so easily, but at least I have an awesome tool to correct it! Easy to use, no worries about burning the clear like a rotary polisher.
