5.0 out of 5 stars to daniel, March 20, 2005
This review is from: Grip It on That Other Level (Audio CD)
this is the original version, grip it on the other level was released in '89. the geto boys self-titled album is the re-released version that was released in '90 because it was so classic in rhyming skills. to be honest, this version is much better because the other version doesn't include the original songs like the gangsta of love version and it also doesn't include search and destroy and no sell out. glad to help you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really did make Freddy's b*tch a** look like a wet dream, October 30, 2004
This review is from: Grip It on That Other Level (Audio CD)
The country I live in really lacks in classic rap albums, especially those like this one. Since this album isn't sold where I am (I plan to buy it off the internet), I have to download the songs and have heard all songs except Seek and Destroy and No Sell Out. But by what I have heard, I am absolutely blown away with the delivery and excellent production and lyrics. I would definitely put it up there with N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton and Ice-T's Power, perhaps even higher. Every song I've heard is the highlight of the album. There are hardly any artists out today or in the past who have released an album where its almost impossible to skip a track. So far, artists like Big Daddy Kane (Long Live the Kane), 2Pac (Me Against the World), The Notorious B.I.G. (Ready to Die), Eazy-E (187um Killa), N.W.A. (Straight Outta Compton), Scarface (The Diary), Eric B. and Rakim (Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em) etc. are some of the rap albums that I don't need to skip on any track. This album is also one of them.
Though some of the tracks sound funny and strange, they are all enjoyable. Ignore the fact that some of the songs are violent, the Geto Boys are not promoting violence but trying to pass a message in a way you wouldn't understand it.
Do it Like a G.O.- this is an excellent song and one of the highlight highlights of the album. It has a very catchy beat and everyone shines here, especially Willie D. I reckon this is Willie D at his best, even before Mind Playin' Tricks

Gangsta of Love- another highlight of the album, it involves another catchy beat with rudey-poo lyrics, designed to bring down the tradition of "hoes".

Talkin' Loud Ain't Sayin' Nothin- I haven't really heard this song much as I've just downloaded it but from what I hear, its a pretty good song. As usual, Bushwick is coming off, harder than LL Cool J

Read these Nikes- Another song I haven't really listened to but I like the sounds of it and hope to listen to it more soon

Size Ain't Sh*t- a solo by Bushwick Bill, this is an EXCELLENT solo, I reckon its better than Chuckie. His lyrics are coming from the heart and he's showing the world no matter how short this gangsta is, he can still be the wrong nigga to f*ck wit. However, the beat is very strange, comparing it with the lyrics

Seek and Destroy- haven't heard this song before

No Sell Out- haven't heard this song before

Let a Ho Be a Ho- one of my favorites, its a Willie D solo and a VERY good solo. Willie D comes out with some pretty mean lyrics that is also designed to bring down the tradition of hoes. And his lyrics are very true here, a nice funky beat as well.

Scarface- a solo by the one and only... Scarface. This shows the versatility of the rapper and includes some of his best lines. The beat is borrowed from Big Daddy Kane's Word to the Mother (Land). Nice samples from Scarface, the movie

Life in the Fast Lane- another solo by Scarface, Scarface's lyrical talent is much more faster than Scarface and is a classic story about betrayal. Like Size Ain't Sh*t, this has a very weird beat and it sounds like a country song but I can see where that's coming from, being that they're from Houston and all.

Trigga Happy Nigga- my personal favorite song on the CD, all 3 Geto Boys shine on here and I mean REALLY shine. To be honest, I would say this is just an inch better than Mind Playin' Tricks because of their lyrics. Scarface's first two verses always make me want to sing the song, Bushwick performs one of his best verses and includes extraordinarily funny lines (you lucky I ain't horny, I'd be rockin ya/She let down her hair, pulled up her skirt and said what's stoppin ya?. Classic).

Mind of a Lunatic- an excellent way to end the note on a negative comment, hahahah. This song was way ahead of its time at the time it was released. Back then, rappers were still talking about peace, while a small portion of rappers talked about gang life and poverty. The Geto Boys were the ONLY ones to make out a story, involving graphic horror lyrics that could be painted perfectly in your head. I especially love Bushwick's 2 first verses and Scarface. Sadly, Willie D only says a couple of classic lines here (the nightmares I leave wit you on the scene/Will make Freddy's b*tch a** look like a wet dream) but his verses aren't that great.

Overall, Geto Boys are one of the greatest groups to ever come. They had never sold out, even if they did have new members from time to time. Grip it On that Other Level is ignored by the many but shouldn't be just because its violent. They're talking about the struggle, not promoting violence. Geto Boys should have gained a lot more recognition than what they got, especially Bushwick and Willie D after Scarface was the main reason why so many people loved the Geto Boys.

Personal favorite= Trigga Happy Nigga
Honorable mentions= Do it Like G.O., Gangsta of Love, Let a Ho Be a Ho and Mind of a Lunatic but really, the whole album is a gem
