Circa 1932, Smith & Wesson introduced the grip adapter to fill the area between the back of a revolver's triggerguard, and the front strap of a double-action revolver. Designed for use with the "service" stocks, serious shooters instantly recognized its advantage. General George S. Patton ordered one on his trademark .357, and J. Edgar Hoover is believed to have had one, too.

Without it, if the shooter let the middle finger go all the way up the frame, the trigger finger had to reach down at a sometimes uncomfortable angle to take purchase on the trigger and, with the fingers grasping lower, there was no contact between the middle finger and the bottom of the frame behind the triggerguard...
