5.0 out of 5 stars Selecting the right tension
From all the previous reviews, I knew these hand exercisers would be good solid devices - and they are. My only concern was what tension level to pick. Just as a data point for others, I'm a 71 inches tall, 180 pounds, fit male. I lift weights regularly, but am by no means a bodybuilder or powerlifter. I purchased the medium strength units, wondering if 7 lbs per finger...

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product but loses its tension
The idea of training the fingertip strength is good and I was happy with the product initially. However, it seems to lose it's tension pretty quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Selecting the right tension, December 25, 2009

This review is from: Gripmaster Pro Hand Strengthening System, Medium Tension (7 Pounds per Finger) (Sports)
I purchased the medium strength units, wondering if 7 lbs per finger was too much or too little. I've found that if I power grip them (basically just grab them like a barbell, squeeze and release), I can easily do 100 or more repetitions. This leads me to think that the Mediums are too light if I only want to power grip. Same is probably true for many of you.

However, two things changed my mind about this. First I went to the Prohands website and found that several of the exercises they demonstrate (e.g. fingertipping) are much harder than the simple power grip. Also, by holding the grip for 3-5 seconds as recommended, even the power grip becomes more challenging. In the end, I've decided that the 7 lb units give me a very good workout.

My suggestion is if you only want to power grip, then you may want something heavier - obviously dependent on your hand strength. But if you value doing exercises that fully articulate your fingers in various ways, then you might want to try the Mediums.

Please be kind enough to indicate if reviews are helpful.

I'm learing how to play the acoustic guitar and I bought the gripmaster as a way to help strengthen my hands and fingers. I found it useful for developing strength to be able to play barre chords. The medium tension is a bit too much for working the pinky finger so I also bought a lighter tension for that. I highly recommend this product for a begginer guitar player.

I have been climbing walls indoor and outdoor for over 5 years now and this gripmaster pro is really impressive. It is build extremely sturdy and fits my hand much better than the regular gripmaster (which I would also rate 5 stars!). I purchased the 7 pounds and the 11 pounds pro version. I use them for hours everyday, whenever I have a free hand I grab one and it definitely increased my strength endurance. Now when I am struggling to finish a climb this little device gives me the extra strength that I need.

I bought this to help get strength back in my forearm after breaking my wrist. It works very well. Being able to use each finger individually was very helpful because my fingers were all whacky on strength after the broken wrist.

However, within two weeks, I needed the stronger Gripmaster (which I had purchased at the same time).

Anyway, these fit my hands well, worked well, and are a fair price.

If you go to the manufacturers website (prohands.net), they show a bunch of exercises to do with the Gripmaster.

I definitely think this thing was worth the price. The only difficulty will be determining which "tension" you should start with. The place I go for therapy for my wrist uses these (the regular Gripmaster, though, not the Pro), and watching other people use them makes it obvious that there is a wide variety of grip strengths--some people had a very hard time with the lightest models. Starting light is probably better so you can do the exercises correctly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thumbs left out of the game, November 25, 2010

I purchased two of these units because I wanted one for each hand. What attracted me were the individual finger strengthening design. The units are very well made but there a few things I wish they did better. First the units get slippery in your hands, whether it is from hand oils or sweat theys units tend to slip out of my palm.

The idea of strengething each finger is great but the 7-lbs of tension is a little to much to start out with. I should have gone with lighter tension because I could strengthen each finger easier. This tension causes my other finders to clamp down so I am not able to focus on one finger very easily. The final problem is that my thumbs are left completely out of this exercise regimen and I consider that unfortunate.

It may sound like I am not happy with the grips, but actually I am. Like I stated before I like the build quality and the overall design. Maybe furture modifications can make these grips a truly five star product.

I have been having wrist pain during the summer from softball and golf. I am hoping that working with this machine during the winter will help strengthen my wrist and alleviate some or all of the pain. This thing is great. I can tell that it is working and I really like all of the different exercises (make sure you go to their website and read up on all of the exercises). I have graduated up to the heavy for some of the exercises so I have already purchased that one. Having two different tensions is ideal. Great little stress reliever and wrist strengthener for at the office.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little piece of hardware!, January 20, 2011

This review is from: Gripmaster Pro Hand Strengthening System, Medium Tension (7 Pounds per Finger) (Sports)
I ordered the Gripmaster Pro to improve my fretting hand strength. I'm double-jointed on the last joint of my ring finger, and really wanted something to improve my finger stability and individual articulation on the ring and pinky fingers. I had purchased the Planet Waves Varigrip earlier, and thought it was ok. But as soon as I opened and started using the Gripmaster Pro I immediately saw and felt a difference. The build quality and materials are noticeably better. They built it better than it had to be, which is always a good sign. Don't mess around with any of the other grip strengtheners... this is the one you want! Make sure to get the Pro version, and plan on stepping up to the heavier tensions before long. The difference in my finger strength and dexterity is noticeable. I have no qualms about recommending this item. I'll be stepping up to the next tension level within the week.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-built, will do the job, February 22, 2010

I bought this to improve my grip for sailing. As a trimmer, it's crucial to have control of the line even after hours of hard wind. I got this item a few days ago and after just a few tries, I felt a little soreness to my hands- which means it's working. I love that it works out your whole grip and individual fingers. I'm not a body builder, but I'm in average shape- my hands are not super strong, nor are they weak. The medium was the best choice for me. I think the light would have not challenged my hands enough. Anything heavier at this point seems overkill at this point and I probably wouldn't have gotten much out of it for my pinkies (the medium is a challenge for those weaker fingers).

The palm rest does hurt every once in a while if you hold it wrong (almost like that feeling when you pinch a nerve). It can slip, too, so be careful. But it seems well-built. I'm not sure how well this will work for your wrists and forearms- I got the Sidewinder Sportster for that.
