4.0 out of 5 stars These tongs work very well, but.......
Care must be taken when cooking over moderately high heat. I'm not talking about leaving the tongs in the pan, but cases where the tongs graze the hot pan bottom. The nylon tip guards will, I'm sorry to say, easily melt. Perhaps the next great step by Oxo will be the use of silicone for those edges that are likely to melt.

2.0 out of 5 stars melt in anything other than a non-stick pan
after reading many reviews, we thought these tongs will be useful for many different recipes with all our pans - iron, stainless, non-stick.
big mistake !!! maybe in 2004 oxo was using better plastic, but in 2009 the plastic they use is simply awful: the tips melted the moment they touched an iron pan on low-to-medium heat.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe that I am reviewing tongs. I can't cook!, January 29, 2004

This is my very first non-entertainment related purchase as I can barely boil water so kitchen stuff is not usually on the things to buy list; notwithstanding most of the cookware/utensils that I have are OXO as they tend to be of excellent quality and easy on the hands.

For the first time since I left home, I actually purchased tongs as I've always seen how my mom usse them all the time to move "stuff" around with much ease. So I got the babies and they are awesome. No more trying to turn over food in the oven and fearing first degree burns if you don't happen to grab the food well.

The tongs are really sturdy, lock easily to take less space, and the nylon heads don't destroy your teflon as metal ones tend to. They also stand up to a lot of heat so they don't melt.

These won't change your life but if you need tongs these are awesome. Now if OXO could make something to make me a cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most versitile - travels from kitchen to grill, October 4, 2004

I have had several tongs sets given to me, both for kitchen and grill. None of which have done a good enough job for me to keep them. THIS one, however, has been a Godsend. I use these both in my kitchen with my cast iron as well as out on the grill. They pick up even the heaviest of of pork loins while at the same time allowing me to turn over some more delicate items. I can saute, turn, pluck, pinch, and grab.

One of the best "surprise" features it has is the lock. It keeps its lock - even in the dishwasher. It is, as the same time, smooth and adjustable enough for me to unlock them with one hand if needed (and at the grill, this comes in QUITE handy!).

COMPLETELY dishwasher safe.

They are indespensible to me, and I am going to invest in a few more to have around the house. What more could you ask for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy these!, January 9, 2005

If you're looking for a great set of tongs, look no further. I just love these things. I have a terrible habit of burning my hands but with the rubber coating on these, I don't ever burn myself. They're great for flipping everything from fish to burgers on the grill, or the grilled veggies. They make a fantastic toy too and easily withstand going from the grill, to the dishwasher, to the hands of a wiley boy with no problems. Great product!

5.0 out of 5 stars great tool in the kitchen, June 21, 2005
By
I've researched a lot and There aren't many with the nylon heads. This one is the best and most sturdy, best made.
If you are learning to cook stir frys and such, use this instead of the heat resistant spatualas. I've had them melt even though they've said they won't.

2.0 out of 5 stars melt in anything other than a non-stick pan, March 11, 2009
This review is from: Oxo Good Grips Locking Tongs with Nylon Heads (Kitchen)
after reading many reviews, we thought these tongs will be useful for many different recipes with all our pans - iron, stainless, non-stick.

we have old plastic utensils from a dollar store and they perform much better; at the very least they do not melt as quickly as this brand new oxo product.
we bought these in a set with two turners and those were not great either. back to the store the set goes. wish someone warned us about melting plastic - having bits and pieces of black plastic in your dish is not a good thing.
will try tongs with silicone tips next.

5.0 out of 5 stars They work great and save my pots and pans!, January 22, 2004
I have the same tongs with metal heads and always gingerly pick up whatever I'm cooking for fear of scratching my pots and pans. I usually end up getting stung by popping oil more often than not because of this. But with these bad boys, there's no fear of scratching so it sames me and my cookware!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't want to go back!, December 16, 2005
These have become a must have in my kitchen! They are perfect for flipping things and the nylon heads make them safe to use with non-stick pans.

Only negative is that they will melt if you leave them in an empty pan on high heat for too long, so they might not work well for camping. I was able to get the melted plastic out of the pan and the tongs are still very usable :-) Even so, I'd buy these again in a heartbeat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful product, February 10, 2006

These tongs are easy on the hands and grip food well. I have the All Clad tongs too and while they are more beautiful, these run rings around them based on ease of use. They operate very smoothly and I am never concerned about dropping food. I use these mainly for my nonstick skillet, but they get used in my other skillets as well.

Feels good in the hand. Love the locking mechanism. You push in the hang loop/tab at the bottom and it opens them. Very easy, just press the tab on the counter or against your knee and it opens. Pull out to close and store easily. It surprised me that even when I was frying chicken pieces, the nylon didn't 'morph', but I didn't push it by keeping them in the oil for more than a second or 2. The tab has a hole so you can hang them on a hook. Very pleased, my favorite tongs.
