From the Manufacturer

How many tools does it take to plant a tulip bulb? Just one: the OXO GOOD GRIPS Quick-Release Bulb Planter! Push and twist the Bulb Planter into soil then pull it back out, leaving the perfect hole for planting. After the bulb is in place, use the Planter's patented Quick Release lever to replace the soil back into the hole. Constructed of heavy gauge, chrome plated carbon steel, the Bulb Planter features an extended handle that is wide enough to fit two hands for added strength when plunging into soil. The Planter's gripping areas are soft, comfortable and non-slip even when hands are wet. The Bulb Planter also features a tooth pattern specially designed for easily penetrating and twisting through soil. Use the stamped in, easy-to-read standard and metric measurement markings on both sides of the Bulb Planter to plant at precise depths.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bulb planter, April 7, 2008

OXO has come up with a better idea for easy planting of bulbs and transplant plugs of ground cover. Even if you have stickey clay soil this bulb planter will release very well. I just wonder how long it will last with allot of use. Grit gets into the release sping so you have to rinse it often. I use a spray of 10W40 lubricant.

I am a BEGINNER gardener and this bulb planter works well for me! It definitely makes it easier and faster to plant bulbs. I've successfully used it in all types of soil.

You stick the planter onto the spot where you want to plant a bulb, twist and push the planter into the ground and pull it out. The soil comes up, you toss the bulb in, root side down, then lift the lever on the planter to release the soil. Sometimes the soil does get stuck but you can easily shake it out or stick a twig into the jammed soil to loosen it up and release the soil if that happens. I do recommend wearing gardening gloves when using this, because after planting lots of bulbs your fingers may get sore from pulling the lever.

The only other bulb planter I've used is one that requires you to stand on it to dig a hole in the soil. For me, this didn't work well because I had to stand to put the hole in the soil, then lean down to get a bulb to toss into the hole. That's too much work for me - the OXO planter is much easier to use!

I gave the OXO Good Grips Quick Release Gardening Bulb Planter to my girlfriend after she spent a weekend planting bulbs and wore away the skin on her palm from using typical garden tools. She loves it - and the planter appears to work beautifully in both well tilled and clayey native soils.

The bulb planter creates a perfectly sized hole for each bulb (she was planting tulips, crocuses and daffodils). Simply push the bulb planter into the soil, remove, and place the bulb in the resulting hole. To remove the soil and cover the bulb, simply compress the quick release mechanism. In tighter soil you will need to push the soil out manually; however this was fairly easy to do as well.

In tighter clayey soils, you will need to twist the planter to create the hole. This is easily done with the OXO planter because the handle is comfortably designed so that you can place both hands on the handle to twist it. It is much easier if you align your shoulders above the planter and use your body weight versus brute force to twist and push the planter into the ground.

Unlike other reviewers, we did not find that the planter needed to be cleaned every few holes. However, the holes that we were digging were less than six inches deep. At depths deeper than 6 inches, the quick release mechanism gets covered by soil which can result in the planter getting jammed.

I should also note that there are no signs of rust on the planter despite being left out overnight in the rain.

Overall, this garden tool is a winner and I would highly recommend it.
