Excellent even for non-veggies,

This review is from: The Grit Cookbook: World-Wise, Down-Home Recipes (Paperback)
I received this cookbook as a Christmas present from friends who are residents of Athens. I have only eaten at The Grit once, and so I am far from being an expert on their menu, and I didn't have any "favorites" that I was compelled to try first. So I opened it up and attempted the first recipe that caught my eye, the Cinnamon Raisin-Craisin Bread. Oh baby.... this is the good stuff. The recipe was well written and easy to follow, and the resulting bread was out of this world. This was just the first of many. All of the recipes I have tried have been great, especially the brunch dishes and cakes, and I haven't missed the meat one bit. Bravo, and thanks to my friend for sending it since I never would have known about this gem without her!

I am hungry just thinking about it!,

I eat at the Grit regularly (but I am not vegetarian). I love it. I crave it often. When I learned that the Grit was putting out a cookbook, I thought to myself, "They'll probably have their main menu items in there, but not their daily specials," which are my favorites (even though their main menu is just as tasty). Much to my surprise, the cookbook has them all! For instance, goodies like the "reuben", the tomato bisque soup, the indian dishes, the vanilla iced coffee, and so on... yep, they're in there. For those of you who have eaten at the Grit and want to re-create the Grit's yummy delights at home, you won't be disappointed in the depth and breadth of items offered in the Grit cookbook. For those of you who haven't eaten at the Grit, you won't be disappointed either! Vegetarian or not, these recipes are very tasty! Thanks to the folks at the Grit for sharing these recipes so that the whole world 'round can enjoy a now-expanded menu of yummy vegetarian fare. Buy it -- you won't be disappointed.

A little piece of (The) Grit,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Grit Cookbook: World-Wise, Down-Home Recipes (Paperback)
When I finished graduate school and left Athens, GA the thing I missed the most was eating at The Grit. It is probably my favorite restaurant, and I have eaten at a lot of places around the country. Every time I ate there I wished that there was a cookbook with their recipes (especially my favorite -- The Golden Bowl). Now there is one (yea!) and although we have had the cookbook for only a short time we have made nearly half the recipes -- and have yet to find one that we would not make again. Most recipes are quite simple and all are good. I was somewhat surprised (although delighted) that they published some of their most popular dishes and excellent desserts. Although this does not replace the experience of actually eating at The Grit, it is as close as I can come without a trip to Athens.

I never been to the restaurant before but from this book I can imagine their food is great. Its full of interesting, tasting, and quality recipes. Also these recipes are made to feed large families which is good with me because I have one. My absoultey favorite recipe is the BBQ Tofu Sandwiches oh my goodness it is the best bbq sauce I have ever made and the ingredients are so simple(I must note this recipe calls for honey but I use agave and it is still good). I must add that this book is not 100% vegan some of the recipes call for cheese, butter and milk but that can be easily substituted with its vegan counterpart. All of the vegan recipes have a little V by them to make them recognizable on site. So if you are looking for good vegan food for a big family, then check this book out.

The best food on earth,

The Grit is one of the most delicious, non-pretentious restaurants on the planet. I cannot complain about a single item I have ever eaten there, and their cookbook reproduces their vegetarian cuisine perfectly. This is excellent vegetarian fare, all prepared so perfectly that even the carnivores among you will enjoy them. From their scrumptious tofu and veggie dishes to HEAVENLY desserts, you can't go wrong with The Grit Cookbook!

Get it before it sells out!!!!,

This is one of *the* best cookbooks I own and probably the only one that is actually vegetarian. Here in Athens, it was highly coveted and it's first press run sold out unbelievably fast! When it was rumored that another retailer in Athens was going to carry the book before it hit amazon.com I called that place every 30 min to see if the book had arrived. When the shipment came it, I bought 4, and made 3 people very happy for Christmas -of course we had to keep one for ourselves! This book features great great vegetarian food. The food is not weird or strange and it will even delight non-vegetarians. We love all the food in this cookbook and can't wait to start cooking. Many of their "secret recipes" are in this book including their famous yeast gravy! The book is organized great and has awesome recipes. The book includes a bit too many quotes from local Athenians/townies and out of town bands to describe how the great The Grit and its food is-- but for those of you that are too far away to experience going to the Grit for a sit down meal, the quotes will give you a taste of what our town is like and how much we all love the Grit! We can't wait to flip through the book and pick out what we will plan for dinner including sides and desserts! Buy this book and you will be the envy of all your friends and your belly will be soooo happy! -Bethie and Brian

My son bought me this book for Mother's Day. He told me to bookmark the book I wanted. I didn't, but had left the page up with the Grit Cookbook on it and left the room. I had wanted another cookbook, looking forward to receiving the other cookbook, and to my surprise, received this book instead. What a wonderful accident. I have enjoyed reading the book. It's so fun; it makes you want to visit the Grit. I have, also, enjoyed the recipes. So far, we have tried the salsa, famous vegan ranch dressing, tabouli, spinach and lentil soup, and my husband's two favorites: cream of tomato soup and mock cream of chicken soup. Everything has been excellent! Thank you son for such a wonderful surprise!!

I was a regular of the Grit back in the days when the hottest things on the menu was herbal tea and coffee. The food was always delicious and I am glad to see the original "staple" beans and rice are there, if just for old-times sake! If you like vegetarian food but seek variety and simple creativity, this is the book for you! Filled with lots of anecodotes, recipees, and serious knock down flavor.

Relax, you can't go wrong,

I have owned this book for around 3 years now, and this is by far my most used cookbook. I think one of the most difficult things to perfect as a vegan is baking; cakes never come out like "the real deal", and always hit your stomach like a heavy brick. I was so excited when I was able to replicated the three-tiered, moist, fluffy cakes I had been able to enjoy all through my undergrad in Athens. I often refer back to the book to think of ways to alter my own recipes.
This is a must have book for any vegetarian or vegan for the simple fact that these recipes are used daily in a hugely popular restaurant, and thus have been tested an incredible number of times. If you have guests coming over, regardless of diet, you are guaranteed to create a satisfying meal everyone will enjoy.

Not As Good as Being At The Restaurant Itself,
By Bruce Peters (Buffalo, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Grit Cookbook: World-Wise, Down-Home Recipes (Paperback)
As anyone who's been to The Grit knows, the whole magic is not about the food but about the entire experience... eating amongst the hip musical crowd of Athens, GA, in an old converted warehouse, with modern art decorating the walls and tatooed vegans serving you the food.
Having said that, however, this cookbook is a thorough guide to The Grit's food which, surprising, doesn't leave out anything. Even The Grit's secret salsa and tofu recipes are included! Actually it surprised me that there were no exotic ingredients in either of them, since they taste better than any other version of those that I've had. Indeed, the whole excitement of The Grit's food is that you can create it yourself in your own kitchen. |
