4.0 out of 5 stars E FEEZY, July 9, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Grit & Grind (Audio CD)
This was a great effort by E 40..Once again 40 shows why he is one of the top rappers out there...I would have to say he is the most influential artist today...My personal favorites are Fallin Rain a track where 40 goes back in time to reflect on life before rap and his independent start in the rap game...Roll On is very catchy featuring Afro Man and B Legit...Why they dont f**k with us opens the albulm with a tight ... beat...The Slap...Way above average song...MY Cup featuring Suga T is the knock (slap)...Til the DAwn.. producer Bosko does it again...Lifestyles...40 once again is a few notches above the competition....Great overall effort

4.0 out of 5 stars The Rap Game Without E-40 is like Old Folks Without Bingo!, October 20, 2002
This review is from: Grit & Grind (Audio CD)
E-40 screams innovation, creativity, and originality. With many rappers in the game borrowing slang and linguistics he made up from scratch, his influence on the game is immense. While hard to get into for beginning rap fans; E-40 is a legend to others already heavy in the game. His unorthodox style, sound, and flow admittedly takes a while to get into and thus is only mainly suited for advanced rap fans. That's not to say that you won't be able to instantly like a song like his classics `Captain save A hoe" and Sprinkle Me, its just that he's harder to get into than most rappers.

With that said E-40's album is banging. Songs such as All Gravity, The Slap, Automatic, Mustard & Mayonaisse, Whomp Whomp, My Cup, Til The Dawn, Lifestyles, and Fallin Rain are all great songs smothered in that classic bay area sound. The best song on the album though is Rep Yo City feat. Petey Pablo, Eightball, Bun B, and Lil John & The Eastside Boyz. It has the most bumpable beat on the album and is crunk to the fullest. Peeps down heya in the ATL is loving that song and rightfully so; it's a classic.

E-40's album is definitely worth having because it is one of the best releases so far this year. Banging beats, potent lyrics and creativity make for an album that you must hear. Get That!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Nice.., August 10, 2002
By
Dan McLaren (Atop the rap pinnacle) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Grit & Grind (Audio CD)
I really liked the changes that 40 made in this album. He's still the same artist, but he's definitely trying to crossover, trying to reach a bigger fanbase and get at least some of the rec he deserves.
Songs like "Automatic", feat. Fabolous are a perfect example. The beat is on point, the two artists definitely sound good on track together (unlike some of 40's other collabs)..
The thing that I really enjoy about 40s albums is that he keeps it real, with songs like "plastic cup". I know that most all of us have, at one point or another, by choice or desperation have decided to parkin lot pimp it with a plastic cup and some liquor.. 40 definitely keeps his ears to the streets.. and all these other so called "stars" keep their ears to 40's lyrics and slanguage.
The one complaint I have about this album, as with the other 40 album i have (charlie hustle), is that while most of the songs are hot, the ones that aren't nice are really bad. basically i break it down to 75% of the songs are hot, 25% are wack, with no in between. I definitely recommend this album to anyone who is an E-40 fan, and anyone who is curious to hear him spit..

NEW BUYER BE WARNED: E-40s lyrics and style are not "pop" and are by most standards, fairly unconventional. He is definitely an acquired taste, but his genious and knowledge of the game are unparalleled.

I bought E-40 and Styles on the same day and I find E-40's album better. One of my favorite producers "Rick Rok", produced 75% of the album. "Rep Yo City" produced by Lil' Jon is a banger. When first saw that it had appearances by Petey Pablo, Bun B, & Eightball I couldn't wait. Other Highlights include "My Cup", "Mustard & Maynosse", "Automatic", and "The Slap". You won't be disappointed with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different... but it's still good!, June 25, 2005
This review is from: Grit & Grind (Audio CD)
This album shows a big change in E-40's style - mainly in terms of the production. On this one - Rick Rock handles a major part of the beats - 7 out of 16 songs. Some of his beats are great, and some are kind of weak. Lyrically, y'all know where E-40 is at. He keeps coming out with some new slang (sometimes a little but too much, but it's all good!), and those fast flows (which makes his sound off-beat at times). But the thing is - E-40 spits nothing but game. I think the best songs on the album are "Pimps, Hustlas" (An AWESOME beat by Tone Capone, great verses by 40 Water and a remarkable guest appearence by Levitti - best song on the album, so addictive!), "Fallin' Rain" (a laid-back song, with a classic R&B sample, produced by Rick Rock, where 40 talks about his life), "The Slap", "It's a Man's game" (the hardest songs on the album, both produced by Rick Rock"), "Mustard and Mayonaise". And you gotta mention "Rep Your City" - the club banger of the album. It's got a very good beat by Lil' Jon, and all rappers (E-40, Petey Pablo, Bun B and Eightball) deliver tight verses, but all that screaming and shouting by Lil' Jon is getting way too annoying!! Without it, the song would be perfect... There are quite a few other songs worth mentioning, showing that this is another VERY solid record by Charlie Hustle. Only about 3 or 4 songs out of the 16 are not that good. Producers include Rick Rock, Tone Capone, Bosko, Mike Dean, Mike Mosley & Sam Bostic and a few others. As I said earlier, E-40 changed his style on this album quite a bit, and fans that has been following him since his "Federal" days (like myself) will miss the Mobb Sound, but it's still a very good album. With 40, it's all about consistancy and quality - he's been in the game since the late 80's and he never fell off.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grit & Grind, September 14, 2002
This review is from: Grit & Grind (Audio CD)
Like any successful businessman, Earl Stevens is understandably reluctant to tamper with the formula that got him where he's at. From his days selling tapes out of his trunk in the Bay Area to his major label deal, E-40 has always stayed true to his hustle--booming, big-bottomed beats topped with crude but good-natured rhymes, given an occasional twist via his invented slang--and it's paid off handsomely.

But as its title suggests, his workmanlike seventh album offers more perspiration than inspiration, barely getting over on a handful of decent tracks (including the goofy "I Got My Cup" and "Higher Power," a personal history that makes the very un-thuggish observation, "I guess it really was worth joining the marching band") and the star's charisma. Neither E-40 nor guests like Fabolous, Petey Pablo, and Lil' Jon can save repetitive, hookless shout-outs like "Rep Your City," however, and too many of these 18 long cuts grind on in similar fashion.

the top 5 songs:
1.Rep Yo City
2.Mustard and Mayonnaise
3.Automatic
4.Pimps, Hustlas
5.Roll On

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Most Underrated Rapper In The Game", April 20, 2003
By
H. Lind (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews

For years now, Earl "E-40" Stevens has been blessing the West Coast and Bay Area with hard hitting quality music. One of the first big rappers in Northern California, not one of his releases since his debut has been less than great work. Over the years his style has slightly changed, and the most evolutionary style we see from E-40 can be seen in this 2002 album.

From the start, the CD shows us what kind of beats and production we're going to see on it. It's definitely different than his previous work, which seemed to be more thugged out and harder. I like to think of these new beats as "synthetic", more technological sounding, etc. I find this not to not be quite as suitable to E-40's true style and long-time fans will probably not agree with the new more main-streamish sound. But that's pretty minor - overall this is still very quality music put out by the boss of the bay. E-40 expands his featured artist horizons in this one, putting on Petey Pablo, Fabulous, Afroman, Keak Da Sneak, and Suga Free. The standout tracks are Roll On, Mustard & Mayo, Automatic (the single), The Slap, and It's A Man's Game. Also great is "Fallin' Rain" where E-40 raps over a sample of an old rock/r&b beat... its extremely unique and emotional. I also like the E-40 and Afroman duo song, "Roll On", also featuring B-Legit and Mugsy. I think 40 and Afroman go together very well.

E-40 is one of the hardest spitters in Northern Cali and all of the rap game in my opinion. His unique character and made-up slang combined with his lightning speed flows create a type of rap music that is unparalled and unmatched by any other rapper out there. And while I don't believe Grit And Grind is even near his best release, It's still definitely a good addition to any hip hop fan's collection. Pick it up!

Overall Rating: 9.0 / 10
