Review of Grizzly G0654 6 Jointer,

This is a great Jointer and a great value. I prevously owned a Sears jointer and have used several others. First, most competing jointers offered by other manufacturers at a similar price range only have two cutters and turn at a much lower speed. This jointer is a joy to use and gives a very fine surface. The workmanship is professional and well designed. The dust collecting system is exceptional with very few wood particles escaping the the machine. Jointers typically make a large quantity of sawdust. I would recommend to anyone.

I am completely satisfied with my decision to buy the Grizzly G0654 jointer.
This is the first (and I do mean first) Chineese manufactured shop tool that I have used that has any value beyond being sold for scrap metal. Frankly, when I saw that it was made in China I was fully prepared to put it back in the crate; but I took the 90 minutes needed for assembly and was glad I did. 1) It is very well designed for assembly and goes together without any fussing around getting screws to line-up. 2) The roller-base works as advertised and makes it a very easy machine to work with in the small shop where power tools must be put away every day. 3) It uses a good quality motor that does not cause GFI outlets trip. 4) The manual includes concise adjustment instructions which proved unnecessary since it was perfectly adjusted out-of-the-crate. 5) While I would prefer a handwheel to adjust infeed table height the lever works well enough. The one design fault is the depth-of-cut indicator; at best it is a loose approximation and I'd recommend a steel straight-edge and feeler gage to get it right. 6) The cutter (and knives) are quite good. I do almost all my work in Cherry and it goes through a 5" wide board like butter and leaves a surface that almost does not need sanding. 7) Adjust the fence and it actually stays put! (amazing). 8) It is very quiet and free of vibration (due to its weight) and the dust port works well. I do not hesitate to recommend this jointer and I doubt that that a better quality/value machine is available. this is my third 6" jointer, there is a Delta, and a Jet machine at the local landfill because they proved such garbage that I wouldn't even give them away at our local reuse center. This Grizzly will be in my shop for many years.

This jointer is well worth the price. It is heavy and requires at least two to move the crate. It assembled just like the instructions showed, but was more assembly than I had anticipated. Keep in mind it is sheet metal and requires assembly as such. For example, do not tighten the screws until you have started all the related screws. You may need to go back and loosen some bolts to get the sides of the base to align with the screw holes. But some patient work will result in a terrific machine. It runs smoothly and required no additional adjustment to the factory installed blades or beds. Cleaning the anticorrosion gunk was probably the most difficult part since it is everywhere.

Just be aware that if you want their shipper, FedEx in this case, to take the item off their truck and place in your driveway, there is a "additional" lift gate fee of $ 33.00. I opted to pick it up directly at FedEx, to avoid that. When I received the package, it looked like it was damaged, possibly returned by another customer, then re-shipped. To my surprise, everything was OK when opened. The assembly process, and packaging is well thought out, and sort of fun to assemble. I used a small cherry picker with some web straps to raise the jointer table onto base, because it is too heavy for one person to do. The parts are well made, and so far happy w/ purchase. The step-on base raiser is great, and saves you from buying a seperate mobile base.

Received my new G0654 in excellent condition. I thought a part was missing and, to make a long story short,...Just as the manual suggested there are lots of compartments and I didn't look far enough to discover that the 'missing' pulley was under the table tops (they're very heavy) where a small compartment contained the motor pulley I thought to be missing. The folks at Grizzly were wonderful helping me solve the problem.

This review would be beneficial for customers outside the US as well.
I live in Israel and we work with 220V and 50 Hz. This machine has done a long way before arrived here in excellent shape which brings me to the first point of how well and secure it was packed. The box went from Grizzly warehouses to another warehouse in NJ where it was picked up and sent to Israel by freight. Here it had to do two more journeys from the port to the shipping company's warehouse and from there to me. I was very concerned about how it will survive the trip and I have to say it was the best it could get. Unpacking and assembly took a few hours and if you are a hobbyist like me, these are several hours of fun ! The instructions are perfectly clear, proper English not like some manuals of products made in the east. There was hardly any tune up to be done. I just had to tune the outgoing bed height, took a few seconds. I operate the Jointer with a 220to110 3000W transformer and it works great ! The machine is heavy hence the lack of vibrations which lets you perform very precise work. The noise level when idling is very acceptable (nothing like the brush type motors). Setting the fence in right angle to the bed is easy and once set it stays set, simple as that. Until now I was using a 10" thicknesser and I never experienced two pieces of wood joining so accurately as I did with this Grizzly. It is just spot on. I made a butcher block made of a mix of Pine, Mahogany, Oak and Teak 6" wide, it didn't even sound like it was laboring and came out smooth as anything. Creating the right angle on the edges, same thing, perfect! Finally, the quality of the parts and the paint work, to put it in one sentence, if I was not told it was manufactured in China, I wouldn't guess ! Before I bought this machine I had to make a choice between a 10" planner-thicknesser not cast iron and this one. I figured out that in most of the cases I did not plane boards wider than 6" so a thought that a 6" massive jointer backed up with a thicknesser would be a better choice, and I do not regret it. About the final price, if anyone here (Israel) wonders if it was worth it after shipping and customs, the answer is yes very much so !! |
