2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not what I expected, July 14, 2004

This review is from: Grizzly G7947 12 Speed 17" Floor Drill Press (Misc.)
This machine was far below my expectations. When I received the machine and got it set up, there was a noticeable grinding (metal on metal) noise in the headstock area. I called support at Grizzly and they shipped out a couple of quill bearings for me to replace. Upon receiving them, they were not the same as the ones in the quill. Apparently the machine was updated, but not the manual. Even the support guy did not have an updated manual. Also, the interior of the quill area was full of leftover sand from the casting process. Since I could not replace the bearings, Grizzly agreed to swap the headstock. I took it back to Grizzly and they decided not to swap the headstock, but to replace the quill only. Upon getting it set up again, it was as noisy as before. This time I took the whole machine back to Grizzly. While they agreed it was noisy, they felt it was quieter than most of their units. They decided to add another rubber shim to the quill to cut down on some of the noise. They also replaced the motor which was bad, and the chuck which was found to be defective. Upon getting it home and running it again, it was worse than ever. There was no way I could live with the noise of this machine so I returned it.

The service people at Grizzly were kind and courteous, but they could not overcome a very bad machine. The runout on this machine appeared to be significant from the naked eye, but I never measured it due to my frustration level with the noise problem. I have other Grizzly products that I am satisfied with, but there appears to be a definite problem with this drill press, especially since they stated that my unit was quieter than most.
