These Japanese gouges and the chisels are well executed tools for the money. I have no real complaints. I have very expensive handmade Japanese chisels that don't perform noticable better at the bench. These are a very good value.

I carefully bought these after searching the internet and found that Grizzly has the best chisels for the price. Once they arrived it was confirmed. They are built well and perform good right out of the box. With a bit of honing they are amazing. For the beginning to amateur woodworker who does not use these to make a living, they will find that this is the perfect tool.

I have quite a few Japanese chisels and thought this set would be a nice addition to the flock. There is good news and bad news on the hoops. Most Japanese chisels require hoop setting by the user. Good news is that these hoops are already set. Bad news is that you cannot do it yourself without alot of trouble. The hoops are a little high for my taste--I like about 1/8" of wood exposed to absorb the hammer blow. These are set almost flush. After removing and setting one, I decided to leave well enough alone. Not a big problem, but I like setting my own hoops.

As for the chisels, they take big chunks and do it quickly. I hammered for quite some time without any edge failures. These chisels are also easy to hone.

I would rate this set of Japanese chisels as an outstanding value. The fit and finish is nice and the edges hold up well. A real bargain at about ten bucks each.

I'd give this set 4.5 stars if possible, only because, as a previous reviewer pointed out, they are less sharp out of the box than they should be. Not really a tremendous problem in my eyes, though - eventually all blades will need sharpening. With a tiny bit of sharpening work up front, I found this set immediately very useful. This is definitely a lifetime keeper set for me. The handles are excellent - very comfortable to work with and constructed well to withstand hammer-tapping (as they proved the first day out of the box). There are certainly better sets out there with better steel that will hold an edge longer. But in my opinion, this set is an excellent deal for the price if you don't mind a bit of sharpening work. I am extremely pleased.

Inspect the metal shanks closely upon arrival. Taken new out of the box, 5 of the gouges I received had fractured metal shanks about 1/2 inch above the wood handle. A couple of these where hairline fractures that I might not have noticed right away, but the rest were fractured all the way through, resulting in a portion of the metal shank that could be freely spun about the tip of the handle. I'll try to post photos to make my description more clear.

At about ten bucks a pop this chisel set is a great value. They work as well as chisels costing a lot more.

My husband bought me these. I've been searching for a good medium grade gouge set for Japanese woodblock printing on cherry planks. I have been using flex cut and find them too "flexy" for my taste, the edge gets sharp but can't take the beating of harder woods. Because of the price, I didn't have high expectations for this set. They are however, well made, feel good in the hand, and seem like good steel, beefy but delicate enough for precise work. The blade is made up of two different steels like my other expensive Japanese tools. They are way better than other similarly priced tools that I own. The bevel is a bit steep for carving printing blocks but that will work out when I sharpen at my preferred angle. Contrary to previous reviews my set came well sharpened, though they do have a protective coating that will need to be polished off. This is a fantastic set for printmakers! I reccomend getting a molded whetstone from Mclains if this is your first set and you do not know how to sharpen gouges.
