Since this workbench top is not sold by Amazon, but by Grizzly, you have to pay for shipping. This particular item weighs about 70 lbs., 90 once they have it packaged for shipping. The cost to the user for shipping was $55. I don't mind paying for shipping, but the top was strapped to 2 pallets which were nailed end-to-end. Because the pallets move during shipment, some nails worked their way loose and punctured the cardboard protecting the top -- leaving nail gouges in the finished maple top. For $55, I expect the item to arrive in perfect shape. However, since it took so long to receive it and wanting to avoid any further delays to get a replacement, I've decided to repair and refinish it myself. If you order one of these tops, make sure to inspect it (remove it from the pallets and unwrap the cardboard) before the truck leaves.

UPDATE: Grizzly actually read this review, and offered me a $25 gift certificate for my trouble. I'm very impressed by their commitment to keeping the customer happy and righting a wrong. I will certainly consider Grizzly again based on this unsolicited gesture.

The first workbench top that Grizzly sent to me arrived with a complete crack down the center. This crack was clearly caused by mishandling by Saia Motor Freight, the shipper. There were other major problems in Saia MF's delivery to my house (details of which are not worth elaborating on here). Under no circumstances should you allow Grizzly to ship your top by Saia MF.

Grizzly handled the replacement of the top very gratiously, and they shipped the replacement by Fed Ex Freight. It arrived in fine condition: very nice finish and smooth.

BUT: as others have experienced, the workbench top was not flat across the narrow dimension. In my case it was crowned in the middle by nearly 3/16". After debating to myself what to do (use it anway? go through the hassle of returning it?), I finally took it to a local cabinet shop that has a 36" drum sander. For $30 they sanded it flat, and now (after I added a finish) it's a very usable workbench top (although it's now only 1-9/16" thick).

First I have a clarification of the Product Description. The bottom surface of the workbench top is not "satin smooth". The bottom surface is somewhat rough, though this is unlikely to cause anyone any grief.

Mine arrived with a couple of dings in the top surface. The larger one was obviously caused during shipping, as there was a hole in the box. The other, a two-inch long groove, I'm uncertain about.

I was hoping for a flatter surface overall, though I didn't know what to expect from the Product Description. The 30x60-inch surface on mine is quite flat along its length, but I have 1/8-inch of curvature along the width--the center is 1/8" lower than the edges.

The top arrived Fed Ex freight, was packaged well, and was in good condition on arrival.

The top is beautiful and the finish is excellent. As others have mentioned, the bottom is rougher (but who cares).

My only complaint is that I was hoping for a flatter surface. As another reviewer indicated, the top is perfectly flat lengthwise, but not across the width. In my case, there is a slight crown in the center. If I hold a straight edge flat on one side, there is almost .100" gap on the other side. Grizzly doesn't claim absolute flatness, so there's probably nothing I can do.

I'm satisfied that is exactly what I got. It's so heavy it stays right where its supposed to be. It came sooner than I expected and several people have inquired as to where I purchased it. Compared to other maple tops on the web it is a quality product at a bargain price.

I am always delighted to see a piece of well-made furniture. The Grizzly Solid Maple Workbench top certainly qualifies for a well-made, well-finished piece of "furniture." The top surface is perfectly smooth and would qualify for a dining table top. Its bottom surface, though not as smooth as its top, would be adequate for any workbench. It arrived in perfect condition!

From the Grizzly website: "Since the first day Grizzly® started, we have been using these Maple Workbench Tops in our shipping and service departments. We estimate that we have over 200 tops in use and expect them to be in service for the next 50 years!"

A year (not 50!) later of very light use, numerous splits and cracks appeared on the end. Grizzly just passed me on to the manufacturer. I am waiting to hear back from them. I am disappointed that Grizzly does not stand behind the product it sells, just passes the buck.

UPDATE- I was contacted by the manufacturer. Super service and the president offered a 10yr warranty or to replace at my option. The issues were supposedly the humidity and mounting of the top and the time of the season that made the top expand. Reportedly, the top expands and contracts with the temperature and humidity, but is not affected at all structurally.

A+ for mfg response, not so good for Grizzly passing the buck.

The table top overall is very nice and flat. Came well packaged and no damage. Thought it would be a little smoother on the top.

I wish I could buy this! For shipping from WA to OR, I'd have to pay $75 for shipping!!!
