This review is from: Grizzly H8171 Hydraulic / Electric Log Splitter (Misc.)
We burn about 2-3 cords of wood per season. Last year I had to split it all with my 8 pound awl. This year I got this log splitter for the price and the low cost to run it. It's heavy as can be, easily 90 pounds, but it works like a charm. I split about 1/2 a cord with a friend in about 25 minutes. Making kindling is a breeze as well.

When the tractor trailer pulled up, I could only imagined having to get a forklift to unload the beast. When the driver handed me down a 90lb box my heart sunk... what did you buy, a toy?? If my fellow wood burners saw this thing, I'd be laughed out of town. I unpacked it, installed the fore leg, plugged it into an outside 110 outlet, tossed on a chunk of 10"round ash, pressed the start button pushed the actuator lever and there she went, no problem. Of course with ash you can split it with a harsh look. So I looked around for a challenging couple of chunks. I found several nasty gnarly crotch pieces of Oak and Maple in my wood pile. OK sucker, split this.... One after another they were split without hardly a whimper form from this little beauty. Some I was unable to split completely through because of the short throw of the ram plus the grain of some of the pieces were so screwed up not even my friends gas powered splitter could have split these fur balls. Bottom line is,I love it. My friends with gas driven monsters that cost five times what this did, are as green as my machine with envy. The cool thing is, I can toss it in the back of my Bronco and split wood wherever I go using my on board inverter. How cool is that!? Not sure about other electric splitters, but this one is a keeper! I do have a couple of CONS I need to throw out there. 1)The splitter is to low to the ground, very hard on the back, so I built a 12" stand to put it on. 2)The ram stops to short of the splitter wedge. Easy remedy, use a 4x4x4 spacer between the ram and the log. As long as your only splitting 16 inch wood, your fine. 3) the splitter wedge is not tall enough, 3" more would be good, I think I'll make one that will slip over the existing one. If you can live with these drawbacks, as I can, then for the money, you can't go wrong with the Grizzly H8171 electric splitter. Just in case your wondering, No I don't work for either Amazon or Grizzly... I just like the machine.... so far.

I love this thing! I heat 2300 Sq Ft entirely with wood. When considering an electric/hydraulic log splitter I was worried wheather it would really do the job. Reviews seemed to either love it or hate it. The ones that loved it never seemed to mention the type of wood being split.
I am splitting red and white oak and it does more than the manufacturer claims. I have consistently split 10 to 12 inch logs and some qite a bit bigger bigger. Sometimes you have to nibble off the edges of the really big stuff with small splits before you can get the main log to split but usually it will get the job done. Sometimes it will grind to a halt on a piece with a big knot but, if you are patient and turn the log around and attack the other end it will almost always split it. It also has another feature that allows you to adjust the length of the ram which is nice if you are working smaller length logs. Finally, if you close the fluid valve it stores upright in about a square foot of floor space. Yea, If I had the money and the space I would like to have a big one but this does great work. I definitely would buy it again--from Grizzly. They have a reputation for building bullet proof stuff and this is no exception.
