Book Description

December 6, 2007
James Oliver Curwood was an early 20th century writer who lived in Michigan, where he published several novels a year. Curwood loved the outdoors and is known for his conservation efforts. On a hunting trip Curwood was about to kill a bear when he was almost attacked by the bear. The bear for some reason let him live. After this experience Curwood stopped hunting. In the preface to The Grizzly King Curwood says that the true thrill of the hunt in not in the killing but in letting the animal live. By writing this romantic tale of life in the wild Curwood felt he was in some way repaying the debt he feels for the 4 bears he once killed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing and thought provoking and beautifully descriptive, September 11, 2010
This review is from: The Grizzly King (Kindle Edition)
Sure its romantic pap, but it is very well written pap, and it is without question the most beautifully descriptive book on bears I ever read.

The author's love of the high country and it's wildlife is obvious in every page.

The Disney anti-hunting, anti-American movie " The Bear" was based on this short book, a novella really, and the movie fell far short of the book.

This book is right up there with the original "Bambi" and "Where the Red Fern Grows" in capturing the feel of nature and the animals found in it.
