I bought Grizwold for my three year old grand-daughter with a group of I can Read books. When she visits she invariably asks for us to read Grizwold first. The story is gentle-sad as it opens and the illustrations are comical and endearing. Although it was written thirty six years ago the book seems absolutely up-to-date in showing how an animal is driven from his environment by de-forestation, seeks a place to live, and finally arrives in a nature preserve where he can live happily ever...Griswold's expressions and gestures are wonderful, bear like yet human, and something in his manner catches the feelings of a child about a complicated world. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grizzwold can live with me!, June 13, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Grizzwold (An I Can Read Book) (Library Binding)
Grizzwold was a good book written by Syd Hoff. The story was about a huge bear named Grizzwold. He lived in the forest. The men came and cut down all the trees for paper. Grizzwold looked in the city zoo and circus. He found his home in the national park. I recommend this book because it is funny and sad. My favorite part was when Grizzwold went to the dance. The people thought he was wearing a costume. I was happy when he found a home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grizzwold, June 28, 2006
A Kid's Review
This story is adout a bear Grizzwold. He was bigger than other bears. Other bears could fit in their caves, but Grizzlywold couldn't fit in his cave. So he slept outside by himself. He didn't mind. He had a nice coat of fur to keep him warm. I hope that people like it. I thought it was a great book.

This was one of our children's favorite books, so when I needed to buy a book for a baby shower, this had to be the top choice. It still brings a smile to my face every time I read it and remember those happy memories of reading it at bedtime.

This was one of my favorite books as a kid, and was in fact the first book that i ever read by myself. I made my parents read it to me so often that i just looked at the words one day and realized i could read it. Now, thirty years later, i'm buying a copy for my little neice. I hope she loves it too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Hoff, June 18, 2010
Reason for Reading: My son read aloud to me as his reader.

Grizzwold is typical Syd Hoff. Wonderful, expressive, humorous illustrations decorate a funny story with a subtle message and an oversized lovable main character. Grizzwold is a huge bear, the biggest in the forest. Soon there is a bang and he sees men chopping down trees until one day there are no trees in the forest. Grizzwold takes the men to task and they apologize but explain they are loggers and how paper must be made. Grizzwold can't live in a forest without trees so he goes to look for trees in a desert, on a mountain, in a house, etc. He even tries out the zoo and circus where he finds other bears but that's not for him. When he finally comes to a new forest he is so happy and so are the hunters, until a park ranger saves the day telling all that this is a National Park where bears are safe and hunters do not belong.

I really appreciate how the 1960s version of this environmental message is portrayed in a subtle way, telling both sides of an issue fairly. While at the same time, it still comes out siding with nature and gives the reader something to think about or discuss. Many of today's writers of children's environmentalist stories could take a lesson on the form shown here. It shows when a book published in 1963 is still in print almost 50 years later! Yeah Syd Hoff!

5.0 out of 5 stars grizzwold is my god, i would worship him if it were possible, December 16, 2003
Grizzwold was one of my favourite books as a child, and upon rereading it, it is easy to see why. It's not a difficult or a condescending book, and the adventures of this bear are literally amazing. I would be proud to be his friend, if such a thing were possible.
Also, another reason for my love is that he has almost the same name as me, and for years (until I knew better) I thought the book was written about me, albeit as an anthromorpothic bear.
I must dig this out again.
