The thermostat is set to the correct germination temperatures. The mat and rack work together: heat travels upward through the two inch open space between the flat and the mat. Heat circulates into and through the soil. TEMPERATURE: GRO-MAT's electric heating element produces and maintains a uniform radiant heat.This heated rubber mat is thermostatically controlled: the heating mat is maintained at a constant temperature. I have planted many seeds using this product. I didn't expect to have such an excellent rate of return. All kinds of seeds are doing well and the seedlings have been moved. The combination of a self-watering, heated mat can't be beat! This one appears to be discontinued, so I will look until I find a similar one. I would NOT want to grow from seeds without a heated, self-watering grow-mat, similar to a heating pad. Don't grow seeds without one.
