This review is from: Grohg / Hear Ye Hear Ye / Prelude (Audio CD)
This is an important disc for admirers of Copland like myself -- the first recording ever, incredibly enough, of Copland's first two ballet scores. Grohg is tale from German expressionism oddly matched with Stravinskian ballet music. Grohg is a sorcerer who causes corpses to dance, until he too joins them. Copland the inveterate recycler preserved the best of this, his first orchestral score, in his Dance Symphony. Hear Ye! Hear Ye!, on the other hand, was never mined for other works, perhaps because it is too tied to the intricate ballet scenario. It's an entertaining pastiche of jazz, popular dance styles, parodies (Star-Spangled Banner, Wedding March), and movie romanticism. Neither work is top-flight Copland, but essential to understand the development of this master. Knussen's performances are terrific.
