Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"Catastrophe, disease, death and allied states of uncomfortable consciousness--commonly hallucinatory and religious, heightened and extreme--are the subjects of Dubie's characteristically dark and disquieting 14th collection of poems," observed PW. (May) NONFICTION REPRINTSNONFICTION REPRINTS RUNNING THE AMAZON Joe Kane. Vintage Departures, $9.95 * ISBN 0-679-72902-X* Kane writes of the ill-assorted multinational expedition that was first to paddle the entire 4200-mile length of the Amazon. "This is a spine-tingling adventure narrative," judged PW. Photos.

From Library Journal

In the apocalyptic landscape of Dubie's 14th book of poems, obsessive memories (including those of his father, a New England minister) fuse with elegies to artistic martyrs (Margaret Fuller, Trakl, Van Gogh). Dubie's speakers distance themselves from accidents, civil war, storms, and bizarre death ("My husband was washing wet sheets . . ./ When he had his heart attack") with a style so exact that the Hieronymus Bosch-like nightmares being offered are made to resemble the commonplace. Dragons "feeding everywhere," a "scare bird," "Squatting cavemen," and half-nude women--sometimes working girls, sometimes goddesses--suggest "the great stone reliquaries of another time." Plumbing the subconscious like pearl divers, these poems intrigue and horrify, but despite the pain, Dubie listens "to the pure/ God rendering voice of a storm."-- Frank Allen, Allentown Coll., Center Valley, Pa.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the most important books of the 20th century, April 17, 2010

This review is from: Groom Falconer: Poems (Hardcover)
Norman Dubie's poetry is so extraordinary and perceptive that its influence and value cannot be measured and so it is rather often ignored by poets too insecure or uninformed to recognize their debt. Groom Falconer offers individual poems worth reading again and again, and the entire book is a coherent, cogent work of art. Groom Falconer

Truly one of the most gifted poets of our generation. Norman Dubie's haunting poems are filled with such profound imagery, the reader will be further immersed with each verse. Groom Falconer has to be my favorite volume of Dubie's work, a must read.
