4.0 out of 5 stars excellent, April 14, 2010
This review is from: Grootna (Audio CD)
This must be a well kept secret, because I am the virgin review. So let me spill the beans.

Marty Balin produced this San Francisco band in 1971. Perhaps he felt things aboard the Airplane were getting a little to artsy.

Grootna is an organic mix of soul and country with some rock laced in the stew, If you can picture what bands like Stoneground, and even better, Mother Earth were doing in the early 1970s, you'll be on the right track conceiving of Grootna.

The female singer is excellent and Balin is smart in letting the music stand without tarting it with early 1970s rock dice rolls. This pretty much sticks to the roots, and this works.

There is a weak track here called "Road Fever," where the male singer stands in. It gives off more of the image of a wild road band than it gets into the actual substance, and in 2010, this is pretty hard to tolerate.

A dud on an album is no biggie, but the problem is it's second on the album. Sit through it or steer around it but keep going with the rest of Groonta.

And to think Balin was doing "Hearts." a decade later. Well, my brain does not look as sexy splattered across a windshield, either.
