5.0 out of 5 stars Filthy, Freaky and Fabulous, December 12, 1998

A very strange and delightful romp through - well - let's just say that Steve Cannon makes Lewis Carroll look mundane. Very clever and very poetic, this is not a book for the shy or faint of heart. A wonderful satire. Watch out though - this book has a strange habit of vanishing from your shelves!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Groove, Bang & Jive Around, January 25, 2008

I found this book as a first print in an old dusty cupboard. I don't know who in my family would ever possess such a book. Its damned godawful but you can't put it down. It's literary LSD. The first time I thought to read it I was stunned by the very descriptive episode of bowel letting and said "this is no read for me." Years later, however, something told me I had to read it. To say I got past that little bit is an understatement. There are no limits. Everything is everything! If you can read this book I'm assured you'll turn the last page a better person because opening your mind is one thing it will do. Apart from all the "outrageous" things included, it's an interesting story line, an orgy filled climax and a denouement that's anything but downhill and it's all groovy at last, after you've been banged and jived around.

3.0 out of 5 stars correct me if i'm wrong, but..., August 19, 2007
This review is from: Groove, Bang and Jive Around (Paperback)
steve cannon can be found at the gathering of the tribes and his voice heard on medeski, martin, and wood's jazz recording, combustication, the cut, whatever happened to gus.

groove, bang and jive around pictures quite a few topics most folks would say are in need of serious correction: teenage nymphomania, excessive drug use and sexual and nonsexual violence. these are the ills and, in the tropical paradise of the land of oo-bla-dee, the cures. the victims of the world in charge, happily doing to those as they had done to them. but there's jazz and drugs and rampant sex so everyone's happy.

the spiritual journey of a 14 year old inner city black female mapped previously by marquis de sade. sade had his rationale, as tiresome as it was, and cannon presents sadean violence and cruelty as a given, and as a given, tools, instruments, that can be used for degradation and humiliation as punishment without correction. voodoo as a religion on this quest, more or less, reflects sade's dictum: all is permitted.

the journey begins as sociological statistics of the problems of poor urban area african americans and concludes with a limited vision of start up countries after colonialism. along the way are fragments of american popular culture pasted together in language, i don't really want to use the word argot, but that's what it is.

so as a read this is a wild ride, a pretty good satire, a sign signifyin of those times. and, sadly, much of the time that followed those times.

2.0 out of 5 stars Porn in Print?!!.........NOT FOR THE PRUDISH!!, December 8, 2006
This review is from: Groove, Bang and Jive Around (Paperback)
When I read the first few pages I too indeed was shocked, and didn't know whether to read on or put the book down!!!!
(I lent the book to a friend, and after reading a few pages, she returned it to me LOL!!!)

The story was easy to follow at first, but then I got lost in the voodoo of it all!

Amongst the numerous orgies and voodoo surrealism, I'm afraid I lost the plot of where the story was heading, if anywhere at all!

(I had quite a laugh reading the other reviews!!)
