5.0 out of 5 stars the craziest guys in the music history, September 22, 2001
By
This review is from: Groove Juice Special (Audio CD)
Slim Gaillard and Slam Stewart are the craziest guys in the music history.Slam mostly played bowed bass, and sang at the same time; Slim played everything he could, guitar, piano, vibraphone, or drums. He created a new language,"McVouty",and used to imitate yiddish, chinese, japanese or arabian. The tunes in this record were made between 1938 and 1942.Great people are there: Garvin Bushell,Jimmy Rowles (yes !),Ben Webster,Leo Watson,Chico Hamilton,Kenny Clarke,Al Killian,Sam Allen. It swings madly from the beginning to the end: "the flat foot floogee","lady be good","Chinatown","vol vistu gaily star","african jive","ti-pi-tin".Really some very joyous music, but the humoristic purpose doesn't have to occult the great qualities of the music.Slim and Slam, these guys were music masters, and here is the proof.

Folks, if you like the wild, hepped-up jazz comedy of the likes of Louis Jordan, the Cats and the Fiddle, and Cab Calloway, then you're sure to love this! Slim and Slam are most famous for the classic dancefloor foolishness "Flat Foot Floogie With the Floy Floy," but they show their comic diversity with songs such as "Matzoh Balls" (where they do a rather credible yiddish accent oon the joys of passover food), "African Jive" (a leave your brains at the door comic outing on the lines of Williams and Walker's "My Little Zulu Babe," nothing offensive, it's all in fun). But I could go on and on. I wonder why there guys are not as well remembered as the great Louis Jordan? In either case, you could either grab a girl and lindy-hop to this stuff all night long or laugh yourself in stitches at the crazy dialect and tonal inflections as well as some really good comedy. This Cd is truly one of those joyful noises that will help you mellow out after a hard day and let the good times roll!
