4.0 out of 5 stars Random Recordings But Good Music, November 22, 2004
This review is from: Groove Recordings (Audio CD)
There seems to be no shortage these days of Charlie Rich compilations that you can listen to and enjoy with the occasional hit thrown in. The man rarely, if ever, had an unlistenable tune because he could sing rock, rockabilly, blues, jazz, you name it, and back it up with piano work as distinctive as Jerry Lee Lewis'. Still it seems in death just as in life, the packagers are trying to find an audience for the product. Charlie Rich did it all, but unlike, say Marty Robbins who sang many different kinds of songs also, Charlie worked without a real BASE. He needed a good manager. The songs in this package are mostly taken from various not-particularly-successful albums. Charlie's cover of Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man" was recorded, then recorded again until it's more of his personal theme song than "Behind Closed Doors". "She Loved Everybody But Me" was a regional hit in 1963 (deserved better) and was backed with "The Grass Is Always Greener" on the 45. "There Won't Be Anymore" was first done in a growly bluesy way that Charlie was known for early in his career, then in the "countrypolitan" fashion here and was a mild national hit in the mid-70s after his Behind Closed Doors success. Most of the songs here however are just enjoyable to listen to but few will conjure up any poignant memories. With that in mind, buy it or move on to yet another package of random Rich songs.
