Product Description

Gilad Edelman is a relative rarity in today's jazz world - a youngster (age 23 at the time of this recording) who plays completely straight-ahead in the tradition of Cannonball, Stitt and Jackie McLean. And a breath of fresh air it is: the big, sweet tone; the youthful exuberance; the joy of ripping the changes - all suffused by the feeling of the blues that is foundation of hard bop. Here joined by a fabulous New York band comprised of Joe Magnarelli, David Hazeltine, John Webber and Jason Brown, Edelman presents a varied and well paced set that includes the seldom heard verse to I Love You, On the Street Where You Live, The Way You Look Tonight, the rarely heard samba Foi a Saudade, and the blues-drenched title tune, Hank Mobley's My Groove, Your Move. Hard bop lives!

Review

Young alto saxophonist Gilad Edelman (now 25, but 23 at the time of this recording) makes clear that he is not out to change the shape of jazz. The title track of his debut comes from Hank Mobley, and this disc is hard-bop all the way. It doesn't hurt that Edelman has surrounded himself with older players, like his former teacher, pianist David Hazeltine, and trumpeter/flugelhornist Joe Magnarelli. But it's the leader's individual poise that impresses. He makes every familiar move fresh, whether it's his dramatic entrances with his huge tone, his perfectly deployed double-time passages, or the way he uses an alto break to sustain and release tension. That last move is on his original Eye Of Irene, which begins with the kind of modulating fanfare that could have come right out of the Jazz Messengers book. The covers will also recall the classics, even if you don't know the particular tune - from that Mobley minor-blues shuffle, to the Duke Pearson boogaloo Sweet Honey Bee, or the Djalma Ferreira samba Foi A Saudade. Edelman's phrasing allows him to put across the ballad medley of For All We Know and We Kiss In A Shadow with the authority and emotional heft of players twice his age. Maybe he's learned that from the people he hangs with. Check Hazeltine coming in after a busy Magnarelli solo with a repeated ascending three-chord phrase, leaving a lot of open space, as if answering the trumpet with a three-syllable rhetorical question, Is that so? Edelman shows the same lyrical attention to a song's details. When in set-closer The Lineup (by Hazeltine), he interrupts the flow of his own fast line for a little repeated three-note phrase, it's one of those inspired moments. He heard something as he moved through the tune, and it made him play something new. No, this CD isn't going to transform jazz, but jazz rarely gets better. --Jon Garelick, Downbeat, October 2013

The newest release from Sharp 9 records (company motto "Straight Ahead and in the Pocket") is by Gilad Edelman, a young alto sax player (and, it just so happens, the son of the label's owner). Edelman has obviously had the chance to listen to a lot of music and learn from the best, and although he's young, he has a mature conception.

Edelman sounds a bit like Stitt (before he switched to tenor) and a bit like Cannonball and with maybe some Phil Woods thrown in. He has a boyancy to his tone that is welcome to hear and a fluency in his improvising that is surprising.

He plays the verse from the Cole Porter chestnut "I Love You" (which I had not heard before) and it swings like mad. "On the Street Where You Live" has an easy bounce to it, and Edelman proves that he can play pretty too, including the ballad medeley "We Kiss in a Shadow/For All We Know".

Edelman is playing in the big leagues with David Hazeltine on piano and Joe Mangarelli on trumpet.

Jazz lovers should give this disc a listen - they will like it.

There's not much to say about this, except that this young saxophonist plays like a master in the straight-ahead jazz tradition. All band members are equally up to the task. This disc is top-flight.

Good mix of standards with some new compositions thrown in. Edelman is very good on sax but Joe Magnarelli on trumpet steals the show for me. My wife, who thinks the only music worth playing is 60's pop, rock and soul along with some current country, has listened to this album twice. Her enjoyment of this set says more than anything I could write.
