Editorial Reviews

Hook Tex-Mex music legend Doug Sahm up with the CCR rhythm section of Doug Clifford and Stu Cook and Creedence producer Russ Gary, and what do ya get? Probably the most coherent and poppiest record of his career (Doug did tend to ramble), one emblazoned with the unique artwork of local Austin artist Kerry Fitzgerald a.k.a. Kerry Awn and also featuring future Asleep at the Wheel member Link Davis, Jr. on various instruments. We’ve added new notes by Colin Escott that place this 1974 release in its proper (warped) perspective; it’s a favorite of many a Sahm devotee, now finally on CD.

Early Doug Sahm is aways welcome. I finally fiured out why he never became a bigger name, he was all over the place in his music selection, there are times you have to be in a niche. We miss you Doug

Texas legend Doug Sahm and his crew had a pretty good time playing some funky blues-soul grooves and mixing a little roots and twang in around the edges. He's joined here by fiddler Link Davis. Jr., as well as drummer-producer Doug Clifford and bassist Stu Cook, both of the late, great swamp-garage band, Creedence Clearwater Revival... Good, funky, boogie-rock blues from the early '70s... Groovy, indeed!

Anyone who follows Texas Music knows Doug Sahm. If you enjoy his music and have never had the chance to visit Groover's Paradise, welcome. It touches every corner of the lone star from Tejano Polka (La Gacajuata) to twangy ballad ("Beautiful Texas Sunshine"). Along the way, feed the dogs, grab a beer and listen to Doug and his sensational sidemen put some music out that you'll be listening to for 25 years. I know I have. Enjoy.

A terrific piece of work. This album features Creedence Clearwater Revival's rhythm section - Stu Cook on bass and Doug Clifford on drums (who doubles as producer) - and it's a must have for fans of both Doug Sahm AND Creedence. The songs are outstanding, 'Catch Me in the Morning' deserves a place somewhere among the best tunes ever written. A MUST HAVE.

The word groove appears twice in in song titles..."Just Groove Me" and "Groover's Paradise," so you know what you're getting into with this disc. It's a little more focused and poppy than the earlier Atlantic or Mercury outings, but there's still some serious rocking going on. CCR drummer Cosmo Clifford and bassist Stu Cook play and help produce one of Doug's best. Stand out tracks include the title song, "Catch Me in the Morning, and my personal favorite, "For the Sake of Rock n Roll1!" This is a great place to continue a Doug Sahm appreciation after purchasing the 68-75 compilation.
