From School Library Journal
Grade 3-8?The subtitle says it all! These are user-friendly recipes that call for ordinary and usually nutritious ingredients; the end products taste good but look completely disgusting. The sections include Unappetizers, Septic Salads & Scummy Soups, Main Curses, Filthy Fluids, and Squeamish Sweets. Individual recipes include Boogers-on-a-Stick, Slab o' Scabs, Diaper Dumps Porridge, Veggie Vomit, Puked-Up Potatoes, Cat Litter Casserole, and Blackberry Blackheads. Besides the nasty titles and appearances, some recipes even feature action, e.g., Simple Pimples, cherry tomatoes hollowed out and filled with flavored soft cream cheese, are fun to squeeze, pop, and chow down! While adults' first reactions to Gross Grub will probably be negative, children will snarf it down and beg for seconds. The book also has potential as a Halloween party resource. Those wanting recipes for unusual and creative foods that aren't disgusting-looking might try Arielle Rosin's Pizzas and Punk Potatoes (Ticknor & Fields, 1994). Like Gross Grub, it includes lots of safety tips and simple instructions, but features visually appealing end results.?Joyce Adams Burner, formerly at Spring Hill Middle School, KS
