The concept of nasal irrigation is excellent. This machine isn't.,
By She has been getting allergy shots for years and with no real improvement, she was getting very discouraged. She can easily go through a half of a box of tisseus a day blowing her nose and when allergy seasons arrive, she is a total disaster. I started researching her condition on the Internet and discovered all the wonderful results people were getting with nasal irrigation. I found several discussions about the Grossan Hydro Pulse Irrigator in an allergy newsgroup. I decided to take the plunge and buy one for her. I decided that the cost (not insignificant at almost $100) was ultimately negligible if it could provide any relief from her condition. The unit arrived and she immediately started to use it. Believe me, this thing is not quiet by any stretch of the imiganation. Especially in the "pause" mode, it is very loud, much louder than an electric shaver or electric toothbrush for instance. Nonetheless, the sound is not that big of a deal, after all it is results we are looking for and my wife quickly decided that it was helping alleviate her sinusitis symptoms. In fact, after about a month of use, she decided to discontinue her allergy shots with no ill effects so far. The only other thing she is doing in addition to the nasal irrigation is to use fluticasone propionate nasal spray. So the concept of nasal irrigation has proven its worth, at least as far as my wifes' condition is concerned. Now let me talk about the Grossan machine. It is an over-priced piece of junk. The first unit we received began to leak internally after only a week of use. During and after each use, there would be a large puddle of saline solution leaking out of the bottom of the machine. My wife followed the usage instructions precisely. When we called the company to inquire about the leaking problem, we were grilled relentlessly by the person answering the phone. We were asked whether we used un-iodized salt (we were), whether we were disiinfecting the machine every week with diluted clorox (we were) and other questions pertaining to the usage and care of the machine. As I said, my wife followed the instructions in the manual precisely so we were definitely not contributing to the problem. The machine itself was the problem. The company representative stated rather coldly that "we sell hundreds of these machines every day and if there was a problem with the machine we would certainly have lots of other complaints about it." The implication was quite clear, we were being blamed for the machines failure. Ultimately, the company said they would send a brand new replacement machine under the terms of the warranty and that we needn't return the defective machine. So we were initially quite happy about that. The second machine arrived a few days later and started to leak in the same way as the previous machine. So this time we call the company and they tell us to send the machine back to them for repair...not replacement... and that it will take 6-8 weeks. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. Since I still had the old machine, we hooked it back up and my wife still uses it while we wait for the replacement machine to be "fixed". In the meantime I decided to take the machine apart to have a little look-see inside. Wow, what an instructive little journey that was. You would not believe how cheaply made the machine is. It consists of basically a cheap electric impulse motor and a cheesy nylon pump that propels the water from the tank through the tube/nozzle. It is easy to see why the machine leaks once you see how it is put together. In fact I don't really understand how it could not leak. It would seem that they are destined to leak. So we wait for the "fixed" machine to arrive while the old machine continues to pour saline water all over our counter each time it is used. In conclusion, nasal irrigation could have a profoundly positive result on your sinusitis condition but the Grossan machine is a piece of junk and I would definitely look at a standard oral irrigation unit and use a nasal tip on it. Or you could also use a non-mechanized neti pot which can be bought at CVS for about $12. A little Google searching will reveal a chinese made oral irrigation machine called the Oratec ViaJet Pro, selling for half the price of the Grossan machine. The Oratec ViaJet Pro sells for $45. Draw your own conclusion. Buyer beware.

Must Have for Sinus Sufferers,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this product with a lot of scepticism. It turned out to be a great product. The whole family is using it, and it seems to improve the allergy and sinus problems. Worth a shot - and allows you to get relief without medicine!

Finally Relief ! 3 sinus surgeries, recurring polyps, infection,
By 1. You must do a rinse out of the reservoir after EACH use. (Since a salt based solution is used, salt can be corroding and eventually will lead to decreased product performance or even breakdown. Filling it with regular warm (not hot) water and letting it empty is a must after each use. 2. Never swallow while tip is inserted in your nostril. This will have the unpleasant effect of getting water in your eustachian tubes. 3. Do not tilt your head to the left or the right while the tip is inserted in your nostril. (water will get into your eustachian tubes. 4. For those days when congestion is really bad, I've learned to "softly" blow out of the nostril that does not have the tip in it. This works great for me since the warm water and solution are helping soften the gunk, sometimes a little blow goes a long way. (Don't blow hard though) 5. Always lean forward, like you are brushing your teeth when using. This will prevent the solution from running down your throat and forcing you to swallow. (although I must admit that I sometimes purposely have left my head straight up so it would run down my throat. This brings so much relief from a battered back of the throat from postnasal drip. I am very careful not to swallow. It may cause gag reflex so proceed with caution. 6. Never use regular tap water! It is painful and harsh to the soft sinus tissues. I recommend the grossman "Breathe ease" powder bottle. One scoop will do ya. I can't be bothered mixing stuff. It lasts a long time and is reasonably priced (I found a good deal on 2 boxes at at time from Amazon). 7. Use it regularly. My biggest downfall is that once I started to feel better, I stopped using it. Big mistake. At the first sign of a sniffle or itchy throat I go for the irrigation. It stops it in its tracks! 8. If you currently have sinus or nasal polyps, you will not get relief. this is due to the polyps blocking the water from cleaning out the necessary cavities. It will however help soothe the polyps and possible prevent new ones. If you have polyps, get them removed! 9. Never, ever use HOT water. Tried it. Will never do it again! Ouch. 10. Never, ever put it on high. Use it somewhere in between low and medium. Trust me on this, do not go above medium. It will cause more irritation to the soft tissues. The higher settings is for using the mouth tips, not the nose tips. 11. I find the mouth tips pretty useless since it makes me gag and almost throw up. If I need to clean the back of my throat, I just point the nasal tip back there on medium. 12. If you have allergies, use it in the am and the pm. this brings the best relief and also prevents the allergy symptoms from progressing. (in my experience anyway) 13. I learned that I can clean the tips in the dishwasher, top shelf. I actually bought one of those suction cup plastic cups that go on bathroom walls from Walmart and took off the suction thing and I put the tips in it for use in the dishwasher. 14. Works for the whole family. I have 3 sons. My youngest is 11 and he will come to me, on his own! and ask to use it cause he's stuffy! He gets immediate relief. Just be sure to tell them lean over, not to swallow or move their head to either side. My 16 year old also uses it periodically. I think that's everything. This product delivers exactly as promised. Using this, along with my steroidal nasal spray (which I need to prevent regrowth of my polyps) has brought back my sense of smell, which I haven't had for over 5 years before using this product. The biggest thing I've noticed - Heavily scented candles wreak havoc on my allergies. If I'm exposed to heavy scents, upon returning home I immediately use the irrigator. It stops the inflammation in its tracks. Without it I would get a horrible headache and a lot of swelling in both my face and eyes. I no longer have to take antihistamines or decongestants. Hope this was helpful.
