Editorial Reviews

Gross Pointe Blank For Martin Blank (John Cusack - Serendipity, High Fidelity), a hit man stuck in a career rut, attending his 10-year class reunion is about the last thing he is in the mood for! But when the prospects of rekindling an old flame (Minnie Driver - Good Will Hunting) and pulling off one final job convince him to go, things are looking up... that is, until Martin's arch rival shows up aiming to blow the competition away! High Fidelity John Cusack (Being John Malkovich) stars as Rob Gordon, the owner of a semi-failing record store located on one of the back streets of Chicago. He sells music the old-fashioned way, on vinyl, with his two wacky clerks the hysterically funny rock snob Barry (Jack Black) and the more quietly opinionated underachiever Dick (Todd Louiso). But Rob's business isn't the only thing in his life that's floundering his needle skips the love groove when his longtime girlfriend Laura (newcomer Iben Hjejle) walks out on him. And this forces him to examine his past failed attempts at romance the only way he knows how!

5.0 out of 5 stars Widescreen? Yes! March 19, 2008
This IS widescreen, not the sloppy pan & scan. Especially with High Fidelity I would think you'd want to see everything the excellent director, Stephen Frears puts on the screen - a WIDE SCREEN. Also, High Fidelity is enhanced for 16x9 TVs.

The transfer is not 100% (the print used for Grosse Pointe Blank looks a touch worn - ocassional scratches), but the single version DVDs are none better.

This is a real bargain and a great double feature.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Cusak rocks October 11, 2009
Verified Purchase
First is Gross Point Blank. Nothing more attractive than a man that can kick ass whilst being a tortured soul....what could possibly be more appealing? (Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.. possibly). Anyway, very funny, dark, and, of course, the 80s references that I, oh ma gah, love.
High Fidelity is one of my favorite movies (the book is great too). I think, Jack Black's best performance. And the movie touches on some of my own themes, music and critical snobbery without actually having talent yourself. Again, very funny and relative. You can watch them over and over...I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why have you not watched these?? ;0) October 3, 2011
By DUG
If you have not watched either of these films then you really are missing out.

Get them, watch them and love them.

These are the films you go back to every once in a while and still enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Shakabuku" January 31, 2014
Verified Purchase
"High Fidelity" was very good, but I purchased this more for "Grosse Point Blank". Now this is a romantic comedy. It is romantic and it is funny. Not like so much of that sorry mind-numbing mixtures of 95% romance/drama and 0.5% giggle that they expect you to sit through. So the next time they say "Honey, how about it if you pick this rom-com out"....pick this one out. Or even better, something that will make them never ask again, be as sincere as you can and get them to watch the "Clerks" movies.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm reviewing the product, not the movie. March 14, 2013
Verified Purchase
I recently purchased this two-movies-in-one-package deal because I can't believe how inexpensive DVDs are becoming in the age of instant digital media (right now, not ALL movies are available on demand so I'd rather purchase these two inexpensive flicks for one low price). It's amazing. I'm not much a collector of movies but I do own some flicks that I love watching time and again.

My biggest concern was whether these two movies on DVD were true Widescreen and would play correctly on my TV. Many of the reviews here reviewed the movie but not much on the product, that is the DVD itself. High Fidelity worked great on my 1080P HD TV. No problem there. However, the Grosse Point Blank DVD, I had to select a different picture size on the television in order for it to play "normally" that is the image isn't stretched out one way or another. If I played the Grosse Point Blank DVD on an analog TV I think it would play just fine and appear like a true widescreen/letterbox format. I've had this problem before with some of my exercise DVDs.

For me it's no big deal, even though I wish I didn't have to change the settings on my TV. Aside from this little hiccup, the picture quality is great, the sound is great, the discs were spotless, service was excellent. I don't know what else to say except that High Fidelity plays great on modern HDTVs and Grosse Point Blank didn't quite exactly. It is widescreen but you see that on an analog TV, if this makes any sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two classics that still make you laugh. August 2, 2010

To put it simple, these are two very original and smart comedies. If you're a John Cusak fan, or even if you're just a fan of comedy, don't even think about it...definitely pick this product up! These films are 100% worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars dark, dark humor. February 28, 2010

I love this movie. It has a fantastic amount of gore....but it is done in such a way as to not be offensive. Does that sound impossible? But it isn't. It is a fun movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Michigan movie! January 5, 2014

I had the movie, "Grosse Pointe Blank", on my iPod for years and I could always dip into it when I needed a laugh. A hitman going thru a quarter-life crisis is funny in a black way. John Cusack and Dan Ackroyd are hilarious!
