1.0 out of 5 stars So bad. So, so bad., September 30, 2009
This review is from: Grotesque (1988) (VHS Tape)
Grotesque (Joe Tornatore, 1988)

I developed my first movie-star crush when I was six years old. The object of my affections was Linda Blair, who'd recently starred in a little flick called The Exorcist. (Yeah, I was watching some really weird movies when I was six years old.) A few years later I saw Hell Night, which featured the same Miz Blair spending the entire movie in a low-cut bodice, and yeah, I was even more hooked. I've made a point ever since to watch any Linda Blair movie I can get my hands on, no matter how awful it is. And let me tell you, Grotesque, despite my being biased, is about as bad as Linda Blair films get.

Blair plays Lisa, who with her friend Kathy (Donna Wilkes, who will forever be remembered as the title character in Angel) is headed up to Lisa's family's mountain cabin for a getaway weekend. All goes well until the two of them run into some stereotypical crazed punks whose van has broken down. Lisa and Kathy don't know it, but they were on their way to rob the mountain cabin; Lisa's father (Tab Hunter) was a special effects and makeup guy from the golden age of Hollywood, and the punks figure he's got a fortune stashed away up there. Well, he's got something, but it's certainly not what they're expecting... in any case, everyone gets to the cabin, there's the inevitable confrontation where most everyone dies, and Lisa finds herself on the run from the surviving punks, while the surviving punks find themselves on the run from, well, what Lisa's dad had stashed away up there.

A talented cast is pretty much wasted on this stock movie that wants to combine exploitation-style crime films and horror. It doesn't work as either; between the crazed-punk stereotype that was old even then (and for which the screenwriter and costume director obviously did no research beyond the pages of the National Inquirer) and dialogue so tacky it'll stick you to your seat, the movie already has two and a half strikes against it. Add in the predictability factor for every plot twist, and you have a Linda Blair movie even I can't abide the thought of watching again. *

2.0 out of 5 stars Another forgotten slasher, June 6, 2007
This review is from: Grotesque (1988) (VHS Tape)
The long and short of the movie is easy. We need protagonists, and antagonists and it's a family living in the woods and a gang of punks.

When the gang of punks break down on a remote country road, they attempt to carjack the family's car. When that attempt is botched they naturally bmlame the family and decide to pull a home invasion to pay them back for the "misery" they have caused them.

It's then when the gang rapes and kills the entire family (all but Linda Blair's character). While they are doing this, a dark secret is revealed that the family was hiding. Within the walls hidden was a deformed beast- the family's son- who witnesses this slaughter and breaks free to kill the family.

When law enforcement comes to the scene, they of course, blame the deformed beast for all of the murders. When one of the cops gets a whiff of this he comes back to hunt down the surviving gang member to take revenge. This is when the entire back story of the beast comes to light.

So, to make things clear- the movie we devoid of gore but had a pretty good story. The killer beast looked ridiculous. I think they could have done a better job with make up. All-in-all it's a pretty alright slasher to watch on a lonely night.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well Well Well..... We meet again Linda Blair.., June 5, 2006
This review is from: Grotesque (1988) (VHS Tape)
I mean where do I start? It's one of those movies where it's really good and bad at the same time. If you're looking for something like Re-possessed, then check this one out. If you're bothered by realistic visual effects, then steer clear. Merrily Merrily Merrily Merrily , life.....is......but....a.....dream......... ... ... ...
