Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Grotesque Tactics combines the features and cliches of Western and Asian console RPGs like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics and provides a highly addicting and entertaining change to the current, more serious role playing games. The game is focused on providing the fascination of the Strategy RPG genre, but also weaves a humorous storyline and plenty of amusing dialogue, poking fun at some of the most successful RPGs, such as Oblivion, Final Fantasy and Lord of the Rings.

To protect the kingdom from the merciless cult "The Dark Church" which has murdered all of the kingdom’s heroes and knights, you will have to hire dubious soldiers and rescue jealous maidens who will follow you into combat as your groupies. Up to 10 heroes are deployed in tactical battles to take on the Dark Church with their mysterious special abilities.

  • Distinctive party members such as the arrogant Holy Avatar, the blood thirsty Vampire Solitaire, the sweet but hot-tempered Angel Angelina and many more
  • Turn based tactical battles with humorous animations not seen in any RPG
  • Classical RPG elements: quests, treasures, trade, leveling up and out¬fitting a party of unique heroes
  • Enjoyable multiple choice dialogues and conversation puzzles in the style of classic adventure games, such as Monkey Island or Maniac Mansion
  • Gorgeous village landscapes and dark, sinister dungeons

  • System Requirements

5.0 out of 5 stars How can you not like this game? March 4, 2011
    By M!nion
I loved this game! I'm no expert on German humor, but either they know whats funny or they replaced them with english jokes that work. I laughed and chuckled quite a bit. I can see where the style of humor isn't everyone's taste, but I don't know any styles of humor that are. I found this game refreshing and funny, I even played it all the way through more than once. It's an indie game, so yeah, I didn't expect it to be bug-free but the recent patch did a sweet job fixing it up and improving the graphics, which were above average for indie games to begin with.

It's a humor game, so either you love it or you hate it, and if you don't like one thing you generally tend to be prejudiced towards the other elements, the above review shows that. I, on the other hand, love this game! The character Holy Avatar is my friggin hero. I'm glad I made the decision to give this game a try, it was awesome and definitely worth the buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars funny RPG parody December 27, 2010
    By Dawn
You like Party RPGs and also a bit "Kings Bounty / Heroes"-like turn based combat?
You like humor in the style of Monkey Island, Deathspank , Penny Arcade or Bard's Tale?
Then this indie RPG pearl is perfect for you!

You are the most unlucky guy in the world: An Emo! In your Company there are crazy characters like the
extreme Holy "Duke Nukem Ultima Parody" Avatar, jealous virgins, and a perverted goblin thief!

This game is not made for the hardcore tactic Progamer (recommended: try the hard difficult), but for all RPG loving fans, Ex-WoW gamers (like me
;)) and yes... also for women! It's very easy to learn and after you played a few hours it will become more complex, because you get more and more party members each with unique skills.

Recommended: Patch 1.1.5.0 for optimized english language.
Game length: around 15 hours. That's ok for this price and I hope there will be a sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun little game May 17, 2011

I admit, it took me a few battles before I finally got into the game. It's a really cute parody of formulaic RPG games. And it is nice to play a game that does not take itself too seriously.

1.0 out of 5 stars GAME DOES NOT RUN December 8, 2012
    Verified Purchase
After spending 20 minutes downloading the game imagine my surprise when it crashed after the intro video. I just bought a gaming PC earlier this year and run games like SWTOR with no sweat. I spent 2 hours looking at the forums and reinstalling to try and correct the error, but it made no difference. Don't waste your time with this...waste of time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheaply entertaining. April 16, 2012
    Verified Purchase
Scored this on sale for $4.99 and the extra star takes that into account, at the $9.99 price I would rate it only three.

Now it's not exactly tactics ogre, but you do have to think a little in the fights, especially at the higher difficulty, and the graphics are passable for what it is, but the camera can be difficult in places and there's really not much replay value.

Where it shines however, is in how it mocks itself.

You start with a very depressed goth emo dude who is fair handy with a blade, soon accompanied by the games font of deliberately ridiculous humor, the Holy Avatar!
Just picture a paladin crossed with an egomaniacal glam rock star who also happens to be an inexplicable babe magnet and there you are, this guy collects bimbos the way old ladies collect cats, and with about as much hissing and smacktalk.
In fact it's quite possible to wind up with a firefight in your own ranks due to their jealousy issues, which adds another factor to take into account tactically, oh, and you really, really, really do not want to let your healer take a beating, you WILL regret it, and how!

Gameplay clocks in at about 10-11 hours, which amounted to about two bucks an hour for slightly better than average entertainment, which for five bucks was well worth it, but take that into account, because while a good buy at that price, and still a solid three star at ten bucks, it's better to give it a miss at full price.
