Book Description

Grounded Spirits is a new offering from author PD Martin, whose first five crime fiction novels have been published in 13 countries to date.

A tortured face. A haunted ancient hotel. An obsession to solve the mystery. Grounded Spirits is part ghost story, part mystery and part historical fiction—set in Ireland in both the current day and the 1820s. With a teenage central character, Grounded Spirits will appeal to teen readers as well as adults.

Fiona Thomas is sick of trekking after her father on his business trips—but with her options anything but open, she finds herself in Ireland. As usual, she’s thoroughly bored within minutes. But when she comes face to face with what appears to be a haunted painting—and a haunted hotel—her boredom quickly disappears. Captivated by the tortured looking face in the painting, Fiona sets out to solve the mystery. Who owns the face and how did they die?

Fiona discovers Ireland of the 1820s—a world where New English landlords rule over the Irish inhabitants. Things get complicated for one local Irish girl, Caitriona O Flaherty, when she falls in love with her da’s landlord.

Note: This story is based on a real hotel in Ennis, Ireland, that is rumored to be haunted. The painting described in the story does, indeed, exist—a photograph of the tortured face is included in the book and that face appears on the book's cover.

There were enough twists and turns to keep an adult reader guessing throughout so it was an entertaining read and I thoroughly enjoyed it and confess to reading it through quickly. I imagine for the young reader it would be quite thrilling as the settings were well described and easy to visualize and the writing style engaging. There was a sense of impending creepiness ... But I'm not giving anything away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another must read from Pippa Dee (P.D. Martin) July 20, 2012

Once you pick up Grounded Spirits you won't be able to put it down...I know I couldn't. From the first page to the last, the story flowed very well. I was completely enthralled through it all (and even teared up at one point). A tale of a modern teen and one from the 1800s, their families, love, loss, history, struggle, and the power of forgiveness.

A beautiful portrait of Ireland and some of her struggles and triumphs. Completely engaging as you get caught up in the history and pulled in by the mystery. I wouldn't say that you follow the story as much as I would say that you feel like you are part of it.
Grounded Spirits is a novel I would easily suggest to all.

Mystery - History - Romance - and a Ghost story, this book has it all!
It weaves between modern day and historical Ireland with a mystery that is well written and clever. The Historical love story / Ghost story kept the pages turning quickly and finding out that the painting really exists gave me goosebumps! I highly recommend this book!
