To give a little context, I do not own a Playstation. I've never actually played a Naughty Dog game. I've always heard great things about their games (The Last of Us especially), but Playstation's never been my platform of choice and the types of games they make are never really my cup of tea.

With that said, every good thing I've heard about Naughty Dog is put on glorious display here. Area 5 did a great job of taking the interviews and footage they took at their studio and making a story that feels it was truly Naughty Dog's documentary. Obviously they did the hard work of shooting it, and editing it, and forming a narrative around working on The Last of Us, but it never feels like Area 5 ever forced anything into the video that wasn't honest to what they were filming and witnessing.

In all, it feels like a group of people who love video games telling the story of a development studio who loves making games making one of their best games yet.

If you've watched Indie Game: The Movie, there's a far more consistently optimistic tone here than in that movie. Obviously in Indie Game, some of the negativity is brought on by extreme stress, and, while there is certainly stress in the creation of making a huge AAA title, Area 5 chooses to not bring it up. I think here it's avoided to ensure that the story is truly about the process of making this game. Indie Game: The Movie is more a story about the people than it is the games they make. Grounded is very clearly a story about the creation of The Last of Us. They're both very different documentaries (and I enjoy them both immensely); I wanted to include this note because there are so few Video Game documentaries that if Grounded is compared to Indie Game, it's hopefully with this context.

If you enjoyed playing The Last of Us, this is a must see, highly enjoyable watch that gives fantastic insight into the making of one of, if not the best PS3 game of 2013.

AREA 5 has made a documentary that goes over the core aspects of The Last of Us, created and developed by Naughty Dog. It goes into the concept, story, casting, directing, UI design and more.
So for gamers and people who really enjoyed the game, it's a real treat to get some insight from the crew on how the game came to be.

I really enjoyed this whole documentary. The presentation was silky smooth yet relaxed, the content was all interesting (especially the part about Gustavo Santaolalla) and It captured how much love and care went into The Last of Us. If your a fan of the game, or if you are a fan of games and enjoy seeing how things are made, please watch this. It's meaty and it's made by people who love games, for people who love games.
