Gr. 1-3. Books in the Wild World of Animals series present unadorned facts in a useful, if not totally successful, package. Children will learn a few basics about habitat, behavior, physical attributes, and the species' young--all subjects commonly needed for the ubiquitous animal report. On each double-page spread a full-page photo appears opposite a page of concise text in large type, surrounded by plenty of white space. Photos in Groundhogs are routine and uneven in quality; pictures in Cheetahs are better, as are the "fast facts" scattered through the book. A glossary and further resources are appended to each book, as is a "Hands On" activity. These activities may help kids get the classroom wiggles out of their systems, but they are just plain silly (Groundhogs calls for children to dig holes--presumably like a groundhog--in a sandbox or dirt). Extra facts would have served the children better. Stephanie Zvirin

This review is from: Groundhogs: Woodchucks, Marmots, and Whistle Pigs (Wild World of Animals (Bridgestone)) (Library Binding)
This book is really cute. It has great pictures, and lots of very basic information on groundhogs. If you have little kids, this is a fabulous book to use to teach them about these wonderful animals.
