I read it years and years ago and lost the paperback version I had. Suddenly one day I just needed to re-read it, and was delighted to find that it had been re-released in hardback. :) The story line is what makes this book special--I've never read a book with a similar concept. Also, you can relate to the characters, there's a little bit of them in all of us; each character has a distinct personality, slightly reminscient of the characters from "The Breakfast Club." I highly recommend it to anyone, teen or not.

I have read this book at least 30 times. I first read it when I was 13, in 1983 and it really made me think about who I was and who I wanted to be. I last read it last week at 35 and I am now passing it along to my 13 year old son. It is a book that should be read by everyone, teens and parents alike will get a kick out of this book.

An old favorite,
This review is from: The Grounding of Group 6 (Hardcover)
I am pleasantly surprised to find that I am not the only person who fell in love with this book back in the 1980's. I first read it when I was in high school, in fact, I even kept it from the library and never took it back, I liked it so much (they charged me for it, so no thinking I stole it). In the ensuing years, I have often felt like one of the previous reviewers who felt like they "had" to re-read it, and I cannot even count how many times I have re-read it. I just recently found myself talking to my best friend and recommending it to her when we were discussing books that we'd read in high school and which ones we liked. She asked to borrow my copy (dog eared as it is) and I'm not sure I want to loan it to her, just because I'm afraid that she will not want to give it back. I will be happy to tell her that she can buy her own copy if she likes the book. I'm not sure what it is about this book that has so many people coming back to read it over and over, but it strikes a resonant chord in a lot of people.

While looking through all my old books for favorite authors I once again re-read this book. I am so excited to see that other like myself are re-reading the book in their thirties. This book was great in junior high and just as good in my thirties. I highly recommend this book for teenagers and adults alike!

I first read this in 1984, when I was thirteen. I last read it in July 2001, when I was thirty. I couldn't count the times in bewteen. At thirteen, Julian Thompson showed me that books for teenagers didn't have to be kid-stuff. The writing is powerful and swift. I still have my original tattered, dog-eared copy, which I just loaned to my fourteen year old step-daughter. The term "loaned" was not used loosely--I want this one back. Buy it for your kids, but be sure you read it first.

I find it very interesting that a lot of the reviews for this book have been made by adults commenting about re-reading it years after the fact and still in love with it. There's a shelf of books in my office that I have been re-reading since childhood, books that I can never let go of, that I've bought second copies of 'just in case'. This is one of them.

One of the best books I've read. There is something about this book (the excellent characters and setting are a big part of it) that keeps me coming back. I only wish Julian Thompson had written more!

You Will Keep This Book Forever,

Like so many of the other readers who have reviewed this book, I have read it more times than I can count. I don't know when I first read it (sometime during my teenage years), or how I even obtained it, but my worn-out copy has followed me through several moves and always earns a high-profile spot on my bookshelf.
While the topic of the book seems morbid at first, the writing is entertaining, attention-grabbing, and downright funny at times. The descriptions of the staff at the school are perfect. I consider this book a classic. |
