Good, but they've been so much better,

This review is from: Groundloop (Audio CD)
Technical wizardry and intricate production are in abundance on ITN's latest, but I fear two important things have gotten lost along the way: the value of the song, and the value of silence. But make no mistake: "Groundloop" is very good indeed, and well worth pointing your mouse at the "Buy Now" button. ITN have successfully merged their earlier symphonic-industrial-filmic style with the more electronic sound of their side project, Les Jumeaux, and the result is eight songs that stir the emotions and move the heart. But for a devoted ITN fan, "Groundloop" might be a bit of a shocker. Many of the songs don't sound like the "Classic ITN" we've come to know and love, and the title track even veers dangerously close to being -- gasp! -- a single. Where does "Groundloop" come up short? With capital-P Production so obvious on this disc, almost the only pauses are between the songs -- which don't tie together in common themes like they did on some previous ITN discs. The Humberstone brothers have thrown in so many Stereolabesque dots and loops that otherwise simple melodies are sometimes obscured. Back in the early 1990s, ITN released three albums in a row -- "L'Esprit," "Sense" and "Duality" -- that easily stand as the group's most amazing work, and easily stand as some of the decade's most compelling and fascinating music. If you're willing to accept that "Groundloop" is a different animal than these three masterworks, then you'll be able to more fully appreciate its beauty.

Another achievement from ITN,

Over the last 15 years the ITN Corporation has been one of the most ambitious and original contributors from the European revisionist-electronica. The early projects of "In the Nursery" and Les Jambeaux clearly showed that the Humberstone's compositions were ahead their time. The twins have done nothing but to create a style and a concept where the intertext becomes a major device. From their inspiring L'espirit, Koda, Sense, to their tribute to the expressionist film "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", to 1998's Lingua ( a celebration of multi-language with a beautiful mix of a passage from the Popol Vuh) ITN 's originality is beyond comparison. Their last production is an extension of such celebration of language diversity. With vocals from linguist Dolores Marguerite Groundloop is one of the best and most original records of the year so far: tracks in French, Spanish, English and even a dedication to the persian prophet Omar Kayaan. No wonder why their music becomes addictive...one can only hope for more ITNs releases.

what it 'takes' to hear this recording...:,

it seems that while these brothers remain one of the most unheard bands, they apparently do have some wider influence in their 19 years of obscurity. their recordings, by their own admission, are soundtracks without the movie. be assured that it is more than just ambient music and eno-esque tribulations--you won't be missing any of your visual sense here. if the phrase 'concept album' was ever meant for a set or type of recordings, it would be the works of the brothers humberstone. each album is a piece on its own, presenting to the listener a single story and narrative that will find itself on repeat, not shuffle, and certainly not collecting dust on your shelves. the new effort 'groundloop' is no exception. its beauty will haunt you with its layers of deceptive simplicity and pull you in further. you'll most likely want the whole IN THE NURSERY catalogue after your first appreciation of these eight songs. what may be a recent edition to their signature style is simply the number of songs per album. . .less is more, it seems, for theirs is the musical meditation beneath the lyrics of every other hip-thing to which you are listening. the only problem may be in finding explanations for why you listen to it so much. i suggest closing your eyes and saying you grabbed it on accident, again. that forces beyond your control must have brought you to it, and just accept that they did....
