Emma Walker looks like she has it all. Just seven years ago she was on the verge of being exactly nowhere without a job or her scholarship to college when she gets the letter she's been waiting for - a chance to work with a screenwriter on a movie. While she's been warned to stay away from its womanizing, captivating star, she still falls under the spell of Garrett Walker. After a whirlwind courtship that defies all of the rules of Hollywood standards, the two fall in love and marry.

Now here she is all these years later rubbing shoulders with everyone who's anyone, a successful screenwriter in her own right with a summer blockbuster under her designer belt but there's still some of that insecure girl that Garrett plucked from the movie lot seven years earlier in her. The crowds, the parties, the faking it all - it's getting tiresome. When she sneaks away for some peace at a big event, she ends up seeing something that destroys her world instead - evidence that Garrett has been unfaithful.

With a leak to the press and depression setting in, Emma decides to flee somewhere she's never been before, somewhere simple where she can reconnect with the woman she was before Garrett - the kind of woman who didn't wear high heels or fancy dresses - and decide what parts of her life were real and whether she can go back to the life she used to have.

This is such a crazy emotional whirlwind of a book, generally in a dramatically good way for a reader. Emma very quickly goes from a starving student to having one of the world's most sought after actors at her feet.

Emma is struggling financially, loses her scholarship and moves to Hollywood. She gets a job as a PA on a movie set and ends up marrying the star. Her fairytale ending doesn't go quite as planned since she discovers her husband cheating on her with her best friend. She ends up running away to Mexico where she discovers surfing and the connection with the ocean that repairs her heart as well as her mind. This rags to riches story is just a perfect summertime read that hits a lot of marks perfectly.

Emma is very likable and it is easy to see how such a nice girl gets wrapped up in the Hollywood lifestyle. She at least remains true to herself even though she does buy into the dream, which turns into a nightmare. Her journey of self discovery in nicely played with the background of surfing. I haven't read a book like this with such a unique twist. I have a feeling that the author used some personal experiences in the writing of this one since she married Billy Joel. I really enjoyed this one.

The fist quality of the novel the reader will notice is how likable the main character, Emma, is. Emma undergoes several major changes in her life and the reader gets to experience them right alongside her. The reader may think that losing her scholarship and gaining the star in a movie would be almost a great thing to happen; however, not much in life is ever that perfect. The worst betrayal that can happen to a husband and wife happens to Emma-her husband cheats on her with her best friend. Emma's response it to leave the situation. She runs to Mexico where she experiences more self-discovery through surfing. The author connects Emma's love of the ocean to self-discovery very nicely, there is no confusion for the reader. Emma even gets to find potential love again. This book was a great summertime read, published around the perfect time to truly enjoy this novel. This novel is recommended for adults who enjoy novels detailing self-discovery.

Wow......I loved this book. I took it with me on a trip to Hawaii. I found myself sucked in right away. Of course laying by the pool or on the beach added to the genre of the book. I didn't want to get away from the life of Emma or the book to end so I hope Katie Lee does another book like this!!! Or maybe a continuation of the life of Emma. I went down to the beach one day and met some women surfers. I now want to learn thanks to this book!!! It is a book of accomplishments for Emma or women in general that have lived a life under the thumb of a famous, wealthy or controlling man. We can all relate. Love love love this book! PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER KATIE LEE!

I learned about this book by chance while looking at "Hamptons Magazine's" website for something completely unrelated. Looking for a fun read, I took a chance and feel like I struck gold. The novel is a quick read that touches on several basic human emotions (love, anger, betrayal, passion) in a gripping way. My only complaint is that there was room to tell more of the story, and I closed the cover wanting more.

[This paragraph contains spoilers.]
For example, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Lily approached Emma to apologize, but we only heard of it in passing. And I don't feel like I got enough of what Emma and Garrett's marriage was like for seven years.

Overall, an enjoyable read!
