5.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but fantastic vocal trance album. June 12, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I picked this album up before seeing Above and Beyond in concert. This album is fantastic. However, it is different then many of their other albums. Unlike Ajunbeats and their other albums, this album is mostly vocal. If you are vocal trance fan, then this album is a must. If you prefer Above and Beyond's less lyric focused sets, then you may be disappointed. Just keep this in mind if you are thinking about purchasing Group Therapy. If I could do it all over again, I would buy this album again and be happy about it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Return to a Dreamy Modern Soundscape June 10, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Above & Beyond's "group therapy" could easily be considered a sequel to their studio album "tri-state". Vocal collaborators Zoe Johnston and Richard Bedford dive into the lush and dreamy sounds crafted on "Group Therapy" and help make this unforgettable experience. Rather than retread previous works A&B have kept things fresh by adding new sounds and themes without straying from their trademark uplifting trance. Some fans may frown on the numerous vocal tracks found on this album but for me the vocals work here and aren't excessive or off putting. As always A&B albums tend to be a mix of club tracks and down tempo works crafted in the context of a greater work. For those wanting straight club rhythms the album singles with their various remixes will do nicely.

As for the album this is a dreamy trip through a emtional soundscape filled with highs, lows and lots of introspection. The album open with the lush "filmic" - a slice of gorgeous synths, quiet piano and a melody reminiscent of "just listen" from Oceanlab's "Sirens of the sea" album. The track quietly invites the listener in before giving way to the danceable "alchemy". The lion's share of "group therapy"'s dance tracks are what you would expect - uplifting, melodic productions. "You got to Go", "giving it out", "on my way to heaven", "love is not enough" and "thing called love" are all urgent dancefloor fillers complete with euphoric sounds, spirited vocals and insistent beats. There's a lot to love.

To mix things up A&B throw in next single "Thing called love" with it's punchy electronic sounds and Dirty Vegas inspired beats. The song is easily the most commercial track the group has produced in some time. Other songs "Black Room Boy" and "Sun & moon" take a harder trance sound combined with male pop vocals. The result is quite satisfying.

Finally, there are the softer moments on the album. The quiet tracks here make you reflect and think. "Only a few things" invokes the sense of being up in the middle of the night, sad and thinking while the rest of the world sleeps. "Sun in your eyes" with its whispered vocals recalls the dancier tracks like a fading dream. Album closer "eternal" brings the dream to a close as the rich sounds become sparse until finally the fading sound of a harp is all that lingers.

There are lots of artists that make trance music and to the casual listener most of it sounds the same. When one listens to Above and Beyond you realise this isn't just trance music- this is art. Amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just amazing June 7, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is yet another amazing album from Above and Beyond. The vocals are varied, and the songs seem (at first, to me) less thematically tied together as Tri-State, but every one is just as gorgeous and deep. I can tell I'm going to be listening to this for years to come. If you like Above and Beyond, vocal trance, or just great chill-out music, you owe it to yourself to check this out.
