Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5Making new plants from the foods we eat is a fun and educational form of recycling. This book on the subject is organized into three sections: plants grown from plant and root tops (4, including carrots), from seeds (11, including watermelons), and from tubers or bulbs (3, including potatoes). After a few pages of general indoor-gardening information, directions are given for growing each plant, accompanied by attractive and helpful colored drawings. Inviting recipes and craft projects such as seed pictures and decorated pots are also included. However, the directions for the crafts are sketchy, leaving it to readers to figure out the details. Riddles and unusual facts are sprinkled throughout. Thats a lot to pack into a book this length, and, indeed, there is a bits-and-bytes quality that may confuse some readers; but the information is basically good. A title that will appeal to children who enjoy making and growing things.Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME

From Booklist

From the Kids Can Do It series, this sturdy paperback features instructions for growing plants from the often discarded parts of edible fruits and vegetables. Featured plants grow from carrot or pineapple tops, from avocado or sesame seeds, and from potato or garlic buds. Interspersed with the gardening instructions are recipes for related dishes such as carrot-pineapple muffins and guacamole as well as craft projects such as seed necklaces and decorated pots. Paintings with details scratched into the surface brighten every page. A promising source of worthwhile, inexpensive projects for home, classroom, camp, or scouting use. Carolyn Phelan

Grow it Again is well produced and informative. The text is very inspiring and will convince children to sprout an avocado tree or plant a pineapple top. Each page is well laid out and colorful. The author carefully explains directions for the step-by-step projects in language appropriate for children in the third grade and up. The illustrations compliment the text well and add color to every page. The book also contains children's jokes about plants that serves to break up the text and lighten the mood.
