5.0 out of 5 stars Gardening Success Illustrated - Step By Step, September 18, 2001
This review is from: Grow-Bed Gardening (Paperback)
Using 740 illustrations, Dr. Mittleider has created an outstanding book that belongs right in the garden with you. With examples of great gardens from around the world that have often been created on the worst soils you've ever seen, he shows you step by step how to have great success growing beautiful, healthy vegetables in any soil, in any climate!

This book will raise your sights regarding how much you can grow! You'll learn how to grow between 2 and 10 times what others were growing in the same place, with no weeds, and using half the water normally required. And it's so easy when it's done right!

Nothing is left out, as you learn how to pick the best location, prepare the soil, plant seeds, transplant, weed, water, prune, harvest, etc. And, you learn how to do everything the best, fastest, and most efficient way, so that you can really enjoy the gardening experience.

You can even learn how to build an excellent greenhouse in this great book - or how to automate your watering system - or how to grow your plants vertically in order to save space and maximize your yield while minimizing losses to bugs & diseases.

The chapter on how to spot problems with your plants and correct them is extremely helpful, and you'll discover ways to easily "cure" what you always thought were incurable diseases.

You will have all the benefits of an organic garden, without pesticides or herbicides, while producing yields more nearly what hydroponic growers achieve - simply by using the best cultural practices and natural mineral nutrients.

I wouldn't be without it. Get yours and you'll soon see why.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best book on Raised Bed gardening, January 16, 1999
By A Customer
This book is a very good users reference to raised bed gardening, probagating vegetable plant growth, intensive use of vegetable planting and growing a garden in the winter for very few dollars. I recommend it highly to anyone just starting out with vegetable gardening. The intensive plantings makes it possible for a large family to have a garden in a VERY small space and even in a city on concrete. Read this and prove me wrong I dare you!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A gardening book for those who live in the desert, March 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is by far the best I have ever found when it comes to home gardening in REALLY REALLY hot and arid climates. I live in Arizona and we have 3 seasons for the most part...Nice, then Hot and then really HOT! The really HOT lasts for about 5 months so everything I have ever planted ends up dead and wilted. I also have a problem with caliche soil and not much can survive the clay. The 'growbox' method is phenominal and ideal for anyone who lives on/off-grid. There is nothing that you can't grow successfully if you follow the guidlines laid out. Everything you need, including measurements and supply lists, is laid out in an easy to read format and the drawing are cute (and helpful) too.

Dr. Mittleider developed a way for those with little land or capital to feed their families from a garden. It is a bit labor intensive, but requires little equipment or capital. It worked for the impoverished, and it worked for me. Dr. Mittleider shared his love with entire third world countries, and with the home gardener in suburbia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, easy to read, and easy to implement, July 15, 2010

I found the Mittleider Method on a blog [...] along with photos of the garden that this family had recently planted. It is too late in the season for us to implement all of the steps that are detailed in this easy to read book. We WILL be preparing for next year, though, since we can see what a difference it can make to grow food so easily and in such volume. It is simple enough that the kids 3, 7, and 11 are able to learn and assist. Our soil is poor, and that is one of the major improvements that we will be making next year. We will also make grow boxes, which will extend our growing season. These two changes alone will improve our yield.
