A Good Resource,
By Lin Murphy (Saratoga Springs, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Grow Yourself a Life You'll Love (Paperback)
Grow Yourself a Life You'll Love is a great resource for coaches, therapists, workshop leaders and trainers. It is chock full of fresh exercises, stories, fables and quotes. I liked how Barbara Garro goes from weeding the garden of life to sewing the seeds and harvesting the benefits of living a life of honesty, integrity and ultimately aligned with one's highest self. She walks her talk with her own stories of being real and assertive in her relationships. She is a great teacher of not being afraid to be imperfect and being willing to admit our mistakes. I have referred to this book many times with my clients in my coaching practice and will continue to use it as a resource.

"Grow Yourself a Life You'll Love" Makes a Great Gift,
By
This review is from: Grow Yourself a Life You'll Love (Paperback)
Barbara Garro's book, "Grow Yourself a Life You'll Love," is enjoyable, inspirational, well researched, yet easy to read. Whether you are working in the stock market, or stocking shelves in the supermarket, she gives you the tools to analyze and improve your life and relationships. Her personable, conversational style made me feel as if a close friend was giving me caring and thoughtful advice. She quotes great thinkers of the past (Sigmund Freud) and of the present (Wayne Dyer) to inspire us to become better people. This book reminded me that we are each a work in progress and there are always opportunities to grow. She accomplishes this in the chapters which explore many aspects of life such as communication, humor, depression, spirituality, and aggression. While expounding on a topic, she shares her own opinions along with insights gleaned from many diverse figures ranging from jazz legend Charlie Parker to her high school English nun. But, to tell you the truth, I most enjoyed the stories of her own life and family experiences. I liked the clever analogies to gardening like "Destroy the weeds that spoil your life!" I also liked the fact that it didn't have a religious, preachy tone. It didn't have that, "your life stinks because you don't belong to my religion" mind set which is such a turn-off to me in a self help book. "Grow Yourself a Life You'll Love" is an entertaining mix of philosophy, psychology, personal anecdotes, and common sense. I found it to be so universally appealing and uplifting that I bought it for several people on my Chanukah and Christmas shopping list.

This is one of the most helpful books I have ever read. It is packed full of principles which, when applied, will heighten your life in many ways that will exceed your greatest expectations. I am typically weary of so-called self-help books, but "Grow Yourself a Life You'll Love" has not only given me the knowledge I need to improve the quality of my life, but it has made me a true believer. My deepest thanks to Barbara Garro who actually delivers what she promises!

Life's A Garden,
By Gloria Blum (Glenville, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Grow Yourself a Life You'll Love (Paperback)
Being a gardener myself, I found Ms. Garro's book insightful, entertaining, helpful in my efforts toward improved communication and relationship skills. It is very easy to read and is a good review of advice in other self-help books I've read over the last 20 years. Exercises, lists and comparisons help point out faults in areas of my life that need a good weeding and clean up.
