If you are one of those individuals or family who start their garden plants from seed you will know the difficulties sometimes encountered. Using one of these nicely made heat pads (We have two of them) will increase your chances of success greatly. If you have not purchased "ready to plant" plants for your garden from the local garden or grocery story, then I fear you are in for some sticker shock this year. These plants have been increasing in price over the past five or six years and it is going to be even worse this year...trust me, I know about stuff like that.

Anyway, the heating mats being reviewed here are a very functional product. Your success rate in growing healthy and ready to transplant plant will much greater by using these things. Now there are a couple of things to note before you get started using these things.

First, you should have a good thermometer on hand to regulate the heat of your plants. They make specialized one just for this purpose but to be honest with you, I have a digital one specifically designed to test the heat of meat while it is on the grill and it doubles in duty with my seedlings. I check on them periodically using this device. I would strongly urge you though to purchase a temperature control thingy especially designed for heat control in these mats...it will lessen your "fret" time. These mats are relatively safe to use and are unlikely to boil your plants but you can never be too careful.

Secondly, you need a very, very good source of light! I personally use very cheap banks of florescent lights on mine to supplement the weak light we receive through our windows.

Works well, I use with the Hydrofarm temperature controller to start seeds for the growing season.

The seed starter mat is an essential for starting seeds, since many seeds need heat to germinate. This mat kept the seeds warm, and most had germinated within 4 or 5 days. I have heard of heat mats that "fried" the seeds by getting too hot, but this one gently warms them. Good product.

I selected this model because of its size (small), price (cheap) and decent reviews. It worked well in that it gets warm and seeds sprout. Right size for a 72 cell seed starter kit.

Received the package quickly and was happy about that. The mat is of decent quality and gets nice and warm. Be sure to keep an eye on the mat the first few days as you grow used to the temp it sits at which influences how often you have to water. Can easily fry germinating seeds or unattended seedlings without humidity dome so be sure to keep an eye out. Overall very happy, made a noticeable difference in germination to sprouting time.

The mat does what it claims-- up the temp 10 deg F above surrounding temp. As my home is at 68deg, my plant dome ( which sits on the mat) is kept at about 78deg. That being said, I sure wish there is a mat out there that could heat my dome to any temp I like, because I have some seeds that need 85F to germinate. If your surrounding temp is way low, then this mat is not for you since it will not heat your plants anymore than 10 deg above room temperature.

Came on time, in good condition, maintained temp well and my seeds sprouted in record time. Did not overly-dry the peat pots and had a good temp regulation. Was not super-sensitive to water. Would definitely recommend purchasing this over trying to make a home-made version. I tried the home-made version for two years with much less success.

I'm on my computer a lot and a cold desk can be very annoying and even painful for my wrists. I mounted two of these under my wood desk surface and plugged them into a timer. One lies directly under my keyboard and another under my mouse. My desktop is now always comfortable to the touch.

Currently my office is set at 70 degrees and heated by an electric wall heater (way off).
My measured ambient temperature is 63.5 degrees.
A near by wooden chest has a surface temperature of 64 degrees.
My desktop is sitting at 84.5 degrees.
