These trays are great for seed starting! They are very sturdy and durable, and I'm certain they will last me for many years. Usually I start my seeds in the flimsy black trays you can get at home improvement stores--they are such a pain since you can't move them without the plastic bending, and seedlings getting knocked around. With these, the tray can hold up to the weight of your seedlings and seed starting material.

I highly recommend these to anyone who plans on starting their own seeds year after year. Up front they are more expensive, but I'm sure they will more than pay for themselves in a few years.

These trays are made of HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) which, you would think, would enable them to take a bit of an impact . . . like, say, being dropped on a hard flooring. Well, you'd be wrong. So to the reviewer who said, "There (sic) great and should last a lifetime unless thrown against a cement wall or dropped on cement when full" I'd like to add "unless dropped on a hard floor when completely empty (because they'll split) . . . or picked up in one hand (and that includes the 8" x 12" one!) if holding small cell-paks (because the material is now so thin that they lack any real torsioning ability and the corners will crack). There was a time that these were made of thicker material, with heavy, rounded corners and like their kin, the HIPS cafeteria trays of yore, able to hold a decent load and take quite a bit of heavy use. But fast-forward to today . . . you know, make it faster, make it cheaper, forget quality control and skip all the important niceties like rounding the corners and trimming the burrs from the injection-molds, etc. In their favor I will say that, yes, they are certainly stronger than the ubiquitous, wafer-thin 1020 flats being sold everywhere, but those don't cost $10 a pop either.

Exactly what I was looking for. These are not cheap flimsy plastic. Well made and worth the money. I will be purchasing these again!

Note that the 8" x 8" measurement on this plant tray is NOT indicative of the size pot you'll be able to fit into it (if for example, you planned to use it as a drip try like I was going to!). The usable interior dimensions are less than 8" by 8", though I cannot remember specifically by how much (certainly not less than 7" x 7"). Just thought you should know in case you needed exacting measurements. I ended up returning these because of the issue. Otherwise, they are nice and sturdy.

To be honest about this product, I should warn you that they can be "habit forming". Oh, sure, you start out by using them to hold your plants, but before you know it, they are holding a group of things on a bookshelf. Then, there's the one you start using to feed the birds outside out of? Yes, one of these also makes the perfect bird bath come summer. Then there's the one holding the plastic containers in the kitchen. And the one on the closet shelf holding your scraves and gloves. Well, you can see how they "invade" ones' household.

If you're into plants only, you'll find there's a host of other parts, from drainage trays to domes, made to work with these trays. You can raise seedlings or propagate new stock from old inside them. I have an eight foot indoor light garden so I have several of these trays in use, constantly.

I've personally used them some 20 years or better, so obviously, I'm a fan. They've gotten a lot more expensive than they use to be - so I order fewer, but I'm still sold on them.

These are the same type of trays professional greenhouses and college greenhouses have been using for years. There great and should last a lifetime unless thrown against a cement wall or dropped on cement when full. There a little longer than the black plastic disposable type of trays so they will fit inside these to move seedlings if needed or to replace the disposable trays all together, and put the inserts into these to grow the seedlings, which is what I am doing.

I have several plant stands that use these trays. I grow gesneriads - African Violets, streptocarpus, episcia, etc. I also use the flimsy black trays that nurseries tend to use.

These are much sturdier than the black trays. They hold heavier items - I can put several full-grown plants in these and not have any bowing or sagging.

I purchased my first Perma-Nest trays in 2008. I still have all of them. They have discolored from the lights in my stands, but they still are OK. The only issue I have is that they are a bit more delicate than one would think. I was carrying a tray down to the basement and tapped it against the wall - chipped off the edge of one. I hit the edge of another on something else - the edge broke again. Neither time did I drop them or hit them that hard.

I've also found it's very important to be careful where you hold the trays when you pick them up. I've cracked at least five or six of them on the rim. If the plants in them are on the heavy side, don't hold the rim with one hand and pick them up. Use two hands!

They should last many years with care. But, they are more fragile than they appear, so try not to hit the edges on anything and definitely do not drop them.
