Beautiful paperback book.....,
This review is from: Growing 101 Herbs That Heal: Gardening Techniques, Recipes, and Remedies (Paperback)
Although Rodale's book is still one of the beter gardening books for growing herbs, and other books have more comprehensive coverage of the uses of essential oils, Tammi Hartung's GROWING 101 HERBS THAT HEAL is interesting if you are a relative newcomer to either area and want a good overview of factors to consider. Hartung includes a brief discussion of gardening techniques, harvesting and drying methods, and culinary uses of herbs including a few recipes (check out Dr. Duke and Andrew Weil for more coverage on the latter.)
The book also includes many lovely photos, especially one of `Goldenseal' which I plan to grow in my own garden next year as CITES (Convention of International Trade of Endangered Species) lists this plant as an `at-risk' organism. Many herbalists understand the importance of responsible wildcrafting, Hartung, a 'Medical Herbalist', points a way toward growing your own remedies and relieving the stress on overharvested wild plants as well as obtaining A-1 oils or dried herbs from your own garden.

This is a beautiful and very readable comprehensive guide to herbs, packed with information and techniques for making the most of herbs and transforming our awareness of plants and gardening. Readers will be encouraged to "cultivate plant relationships" which can become profound acts of self-help, ecological preservation, and cultural renewal.

Herbs for Everyone,
By Shanland "JW" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Growing 101 Herbs That Heal: Gardening Techniques, Recipes, and Remedies (Paperback)
I have had the pleasure of knowing the author of this book since we were both young children. I have watched her develop her knowledge and skills in this area for 20 years, yet I was amazed at the amount of information she provided in her book! Her style in presenting the information allows even the most novice of gardeners ample opportunity to learn and develop their skills. Yet she provides considerable information to those readers who are more advanced in their gardening skills.Easy to read, easy to understand, it leaves you wanting more. I sincerely hope that Tammi undertakes another book (as her extremely busy schedule allows!) in the not so distant future.

This helpful book gives a lot of great information on how to grow the 101 herbs. She gives ideas for herb garden designs, a few recipes for "medicinal food" herbs and most importantly growing information for the herbs. How easy they are to start from seed and any pretreatments the seeds need to germinate, whether the herbs like sun, shade, moisture, etc. She even gives charts on suggestions for theme gardens (culinary, upper respiratory, digestion, etc.). For actual recipes on how to use the herbs for these purposes, I recommend Rosemary Gladstar's book Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health: 175 Teas, Tonics, Oils, Salves, Tinctures, and Other Natural Remedies for the Entire Family.

A Must-Have Book for Beginning Herbalists,
By T. Bird (Asheville, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Growing 101 Herbs That Heal: Gardening Techniques, Recipes, and Remedies (Paperback)
This book should be required reading for anyone seeking a certificate in herbology, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a greater understanding of herbs, their uses, and how to cultivate them. It's a beautiful reference book, full of charts and pictures to keep the reader visually satisfied. It touches on EVERY aspect of growing herbs, from soil preparation, to set-up, to understanding what parameters you will need for your garden, pest control, growing conditions, etc. Includes information about harvesting, and even recipes to make use of your herbs. This is one of my favorite gardening books, packed full of useful information.

If you're interested in medicinal herbs, being able to take care of yourself holistically, or even just in preserving endangered plants this is a great book to own. It not only tells you where you can get the seeds or plants, how to grow them, how to harvest them (which is detrimental to the value of many), but it offers information, as well and if you're interested, in trying to sell some once it's been grown from your garden (it gives an idea on sales value and what market's apt to buy what). It also tells which herbs are used for what, and by who. Plus it throws in some yummy and medicinal recipes too.
