I would say this book is written for the 9 - 13 year old group. It is fun to read with nice illustrations, and told in a story-like manner. The problem with that is that it seems very fictional. Why does the author suggest that this is how ancient Egyptians lived? There is not much information about what has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs which verify the author's claims.

Perhaps this is fine for children with a passing interest in the subject, but my 9 year old is very skeptical and wants to know WHY it's supposed that Egyptians trained housecats to hunt, for instance.

The language is simple enough for 9 year olds, and there is enough to read to make it interesting.

There is so much information packed onto the pages of this childrens book you'll feel like you went to a seminar on Ancient Egypt. (Did you know that ancient Egyptian men had to pay alimony if they divorced their wives?)Not only is it well researched and well written it is also beautifully laid out and illustrated, I'll definitly buy more Troll books for my children.

I borrowed this book from our local library to preview it before ordering it. The text is very readable and well written, providing many details that match the detailed illustrations(more on those in a minute). The text consists of about 3-4 paragraphs on each page with the majority of the page given to the illustrations. Also provided on many of the pages are captions explaining more detail in a couple of sentences. So for information content, I believe there is a great deal presented for the reader to absorb. The illustrations are the icing on the cake. Done by Angus McBride(whose name should be on the front cover as well) they are full of color and detail. The Egyptians look like they could step off the page and show an amazing amount of detail in their facial expressions, dress, even hairstyles. They look like humans unlike many depictions I have seen in other books.
I have spent a lot of time on the internet selecting books for us to use as we study at home. This one stands out above the rest and will be purchased while some of the other Ancient Egypt titles will be borrowed, studied, and returned to the library.
The good news is there are five other titles in this Growing Up series. If they are all done as well as this paperback edition, I will be tracking them all down for future use.
And for concerned parents, there is nothing that I would call objectionable in the illustrations or text.
Overall, a really well done book and one I highly recommend.
