Book Description

December 31, 2003
Welcome to my family. This is a collection of true stories from my childhood. Stories range from wedding disasters and family dance recitals, to fatherly lessons on homosexuality and timeshare scams, to the torturing of my dad by the dozen women that make up my mom's family. I grew up working at my family's roast beef stand, and attended a Catholic high school where both of my parents teach. I have since fled to California, but the east coast runs deep in my blood. This book is a funny, sarcastic, and warm look back on my early years, surviving in a big, low budget family.

This collection of stories form Pat Carey's childhood offer a good laugh and are well written. You don't need to be Catholic or from an extra large family to get the humor.

4.0 out of 5 stars IndieReader Review, January 14, 2012
This review is from: Growing Up Irish Catholic, and Surviving My Mom's Eleven Sisters (Paperback)
Growing Up Irish Catholic is comprised of a series of frequently humorous stories about the author's Massachusetts-based Irish Catholic family and his experiences growing up with them.

It plays on a common theme of a generational divide, with the author, a male, seeking to constantly push the boundaries of what his "old-school" family finds acceptable. The book's tagline may as well be "boys will be boys."

Pat Carey is an honest and unafraid author, not only daring to recount many humiliating tales from his adolescence, but taking great joy in telling them. He fuses the actions of a young boy with the wisdom of his older self and creates many deliciously funny vignettes. Carey is sarcastic and misanthropic enough to please any Woody Allen fan, but he is also compassionate and careful to point out his own deficiencies.

He's the "everyman"; he's simply voicing what everyone is thinking but nobody has the gumption to say out loud. Growing Up Irish Catholic is primarily aimed at men, but anyone with a quirky or exotic family will find it resonant.
