Book Description

October 8, 2011
An insightful look at life inside a conservative evangelical community--the Church of Christ.  Growing up in a big church in a small town, Mike S. Allen's thoughts and stories come from his unique perspective as the son of a famous preacher. Some of his memories are fond and some are, naturally, conflicted.

The narrative also includes sharing from dozens of other believers who talk about their experiences in a place where folks sometimes held strong, heaven-or-hell opinions about various doctrines.

Sprinkled with wit and wisdom, Growing Up Church of Christ is a memory book that eventually leads to a crossroad: remain in the church of one's youth or take strides in a different direction?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A narrative with funny, poignant memories." Kirkus Reviews

From the Author

I began writing this sort-of memoir in the winter of 2009, but it really existed long before that. It sat in journals and in photo albums and on random pieces of paper in shoeboxes. I wanted to pull together the bits and pieces of my story--of growing up in the Church of Christ, and I wanted to hear other people's stories as well. So I asked some old friends and friends-of-old friends for their two cents, and many obliged.
...
By the time you make it to "The End," I hope you'll have found a connection to some thought or story, and in that connection, I hope you will have been helped a little in your own journey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it December 15, 2011
By Wes
Format:Paperback
I just finished reading Growing Up Church of Christ by Mike S. Allen.

This book isn't so much a narrative as it is a topically arranged collection of memories served to readers in bite-sized portions. This makes for easy, fast reading, and I found it to be a page-turner.

I also found myself being flooded with memories while reading largely because I have personal connection to many of the people or institutions referenced. For instance, Mike's `principle Bobby' gave me two spankings when I attended Central Arkansas Christian School - once for punching a boy in the mouth, and then again ... for punching another boy in the mouth.

The College Church's boycott of the local convenience store in Searcy is also something I remember hearing about. This store was displaying pornographic magazines on the racks in full view of children, and I believe it was my dad who brought this to the attention of the mayor which led to a new law being passed banning such displays.

Additionally, Harding University is my alma mater, and Jimmy Allen (Mike's father) taught my Romans class. Dr. Allen was and is quite a character, and I really enjoyed Mike's stories about him.

I could go on, but you get the idea - and personal connection or not, if you "grew up Church of Christ", reading this book will bring back a flood of memories for you too.

Mike's sense of humor comes through loud and clear in the writing. I read Growing Up Church of Christ with a smile on my face many times laughing out loud. Various topics are addressed in a tongue-in-cheek fashion - swearing, clapping and instrumental music, VBS, youth group stories, the evils of Rock-n-Roll, "The Baptists" - all handled in a tasteful and good-natured way.

Serious topics are also addressed, albeit less frequently. Mike shares a bit about what it was like growing up "in the shadow" of his father who is a famous preacher in Church of Christ circles, and several times references various personal struggles he's had with life and faith. There are also sections on race relations, church discipline, the struggle between staying with the CoC or leaving it, and much more.

My favorite excerpt from the book is found on pages 48 & 49. In recounting the night of one of Jimmy Allen's famous gospel meetings, Mike shares this:

"Evening gospel meeting with us school-aged kids sitting up front. Fiery sermon and a long invitation song. People, young and old, come streaming down the aisles. A few of them, mostly women and girls, are crying. The young want to be baptized; the old want to be restored. So many are coming forward that there aren't enough seats for everyone. Which brings me to the best part. The elders, the ones receiving the responders, pause. they give us kids - all of us singing our lungs out - a little nod. We vacate our seats and go to stand in front of the stage. We look out at the crowd, at the responders who just keep coming. We stand there, grinning like fools. We're part of this mass of moving people. We're giving up our seats, so more can come forward. We're watching the world change right before our eyes."

If you "grew up Church of Christ" or in any conservative Evangelical tradition, you will thoroughly enjoy reading Growing Up Church of Christ by Mike S. Allen - I certainly did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Walk Down Memory Lane December 23, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read this book in a little under two hours. It is a mostly light-hearted account of various things one may like would have encountered in Churches of Christ. It reads in "snap-shots" of time. Mike is thoughtful but at the same time does not take himself too seriously. He is also very honest in his approach.

I found the stories VERY familiar because as best I can tell he is only about 6 months older than me, so we shared a LOT of the same memories and back-grounds.

I have many memories of his father Jimmy Allen and recall distinctly getting my rear end kicked on the basketball court once when playing him as a college freshman or sophomore at Harding (as best I can recall he MUST have been in his fifties). One big regret I have was that as a Bible major I was too afraid to take his Roman's class because I had heard that it was so hard that even the Apostle Paul would have flunked it! One student, fearing the worst, reportedly submitted his test half-heartedly to him, having written the scripture on the bottom, "Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy." Sure enough he got his test back from brother Allen with lots of red marking and an "F" along with the following scriptural response, "My people perish for lack of knowledge."

I find a kindred spirit in Mike. Having grown up in a very legalistic environment within a Church of Christ I knew what lip-service to grace was, but did not take real strides to knowing what the real thing was until, ironically, I was five years out from having graduated from Harding with a Bible degree!

A movement can hyper-extend its arm patting itself on the back, while condemning people in other movements, and invalidate through their lack of love and understanding any advantage they may have had in properly OUTWARDLY observing the truth in the process.

Mike's observations are skillfully conjoined with those of other people from other places and times as a tapestry is woven. While there are many things that churches of Christ get right, and while I believe we are closer on the truth on many if not most things than any other groups I know, many of my brethren never seem to have grasped that continued salvation does not come through being RIGHT ENOUGH.

Mike shows the good, the bad and the ugly of what can be observed in our movement but NOT in a way that comes across like a pointing finger. We need MANY more people like Mike WITHIN our movement to get across the truth as we seek through faith, expressing itself in love focused ways, to gently correct as God would have us to.

Our movement, more than ANY single other thing, needs more humility in approaching the throne of God, realizing that it is not approached though our own power of being right enough in our faith-walk, but ONLY via the precious blood of His blessed Son Jesus.
