4.0 out of 5 stars It was a great help to me., April 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Growing Up First Born (Paperback)
As a first born, this book helped me understand more about the who & why about myself. It helped to understand my parents and my siblings. It brought to my attention that I am not the only one in my family that is a First Born. Dr. Leman has a great sense of humor which helps lighten up areas that were difficult to read about. He not only provided information about me but also included techniques and processes to help get past some of the bad feelings. This book is not just for the first born. It is for parents and siblings.

There were some theories that were interesting but hard to completely believe in.

If you or the one you love was the firstborn son or daughter in your family, read this book. Otherwise read "The Birth Order Book." It is amazing how many things about our personalities seem to determined by the order in which we were born into the family.

As I read this book, I was suprised at how well I was described in these pages as first born son. I have since also read the "Birth Order Book" and found it helpful as I sought to understand my siblings better. And both books are helpful now as I seek to be there for my boys.

5.0 out of 5 stars My world tilted on its axis!, May 9, 2000

This review is from: Growing Up First Born (Paperback)
This book has not only helped me understand myself (an "only child") but also helped me avoid some of the pitfalls in raising my widely spaced children. I have recommended it to many people over the years, and withouth exception they have found it illuminating and practical. With humor and compassion, Leman lead me to acceptance of certain traits and the release of others. It has definitely made me a better parent, and a better person.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book explained a LOT!, March 25, 2010

If you grew up with brothers and sisters, you'll easily recognize yourself in this book as your position in the family is clearly and well identified based on your birth order. This book will surprise you! As a grown adult, it was extremely interesting to read about the patterns that "first born" and other siblings exhibit in their lives. And, it explains that there can be more than one "first born"! The author has really pegged this topic and I'm confident that, while you may not fit every pattern, you'll find that you recognize yourself as you read. It's a great read that we have lent others and received the same reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars everyone should read this book, September 22, 2008
If you are a firstborn, have married a firstborn, or will raise a firstborn, this book is for you. Great insights into firstborns and why we do what we do. It helped me (a firstborn) understand some of the struggles that I had with my parents (a lastborn and a 4th-out-of-5). Dr. Leman doesn't make excuses for some of the hard choices that firstborns have a tendency to make, but he explains them - so that those who haven't made mistakes while being or loving a firstborn could avoid some potential hard times. Overall - great insights and a good read.
