Winner of two of America's most coveted garden awards,
By A Customer
This review is from: Growing Good Roses [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The tape is a gorgeous 56 minute seduction: If the roses themselves don't get you--the splendid allees and beds of hybrid and heirlooms, climbers and miniatures, grandifloras and hybrid teas--then the information will. It's no accident that Reddell's modest title is "Growing Good Roses." In easy-to-follow steps, he walks you through the life cycle of a rose, from planting bareroot bushes to picking a blossom that won't wilt. Reddell doesn't dismiss the problems of rose growing--the plagues of mildew and rust, blackspot and spider mites, the plants' "insatiable thirst and incurable hunger"--but his casual confidence about overcoming them is contagious. And his advice--the best fertilizer is always the one on sale, he says--is always refreshingly down to earth. SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

I recently purchased this tape from Ritway Inc.(supplier for HGTV) Knoxville, TN, as the main program for our VPRS' (Virginia Peninsula Rose Society) monthly meeting with an attendance of approx. 40 people. The narration and the compilation of the most important information for Rose Growers was superb, however, we lost half of the audience after about 15 minutes, because the background music was drowining out the narration. Apparently, this tape was not manufactured for higher volume sound. I contacted Ritway Customer Service for them to inform the manufacturer of this defect. The person I spoke with became annoyed and suggested I return the tape for a refund. Unfortunately, she missed the point of my call. As stated before, the content and narration are outstanding. Is there anyone in this audience able to make a difference?

I finally bought the book after taking it out several times from the library. It is more thorough than the tape. I have many books on roses, but this is my favorite because it is more detailed. I need exact instructions on the 'how to's. Especially good on what to do when roses break dormancy. Unfortunately, the author now does Miracle Grow commercials. I feel like he has sold out a little bit. Of course, given the opportunity, I would probably do the same !
