A superior and highly recommended introductory guide,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Growing Money: A Complete (and Completely Updated!) Investing Guide for Kids (Paperback)
Gail Karlitz's Growing Money: A Complete Investing Guide For Kids is an exceptional investing guide in that it is written specifically to teach children (and adults!) how to make their money work for them. Covering savings in a bank, bods, stocks, and how to read the financial pages, Growing Money is a superb guide - and since it's written simply enough for a young person to learn from, it also makes excellent starter reading for adults who have never dabbled in investing before. The prose text is in large type and very straightforward, but does not talk down to the reader. Growing Money is a superior and highly recommended introductory guide, especially for the young people growing up in this brand new era of electronically transmitted investment capital.

Wonderful! An easy read on a difficult topic!,

A wonderful book! I can finally teach investing to my 4-6 grade students. GROWING MONEY actually makes this intimidating topic interesting to kids, and is clear enough to give me the confidence to teach it. Although it claims to be for ages 9-12, it made a great gift for my 16 year old nephew. He's been recommending it to all his friends as well.

Let me explain to everyone who says otherwise, the point of this book was NOT to make children think that stock marketing was the only way to get money. No, the book was just trying to teach children about stock marketing so they could understand it and could possibly use it no or when they get older. I think the book had great details and explained the stock market very accurately.

Great book for getting children interested in investing,
By Ted Lea (Victoria Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Growing Money (Paperback)
Reviewed by Ted Lea, author of "When I Grow Up I'm Going to be a Millionaire (A Children's Guide to Mutual Funds)". Many adults wish they had started investing when they were younger. This book provides a good framework for children to start understanding the concepts of investing, which will serve them all through life. When your children grow up to be financially secure they can make a difference in society, hopefully by helping others or protecting natural areas. This book is easy to read and provides a great introduction.

My son is 9 and has latched on to this book. He skips around to read different sections and really seems to be enjoying it. He is already saving to start his first bank account, so we will see where he can go from here. After glancing through it, this seems to be a well written and easy to understand book. Hopefully this will be a good influence on him!

The Last Chapter is Key to Succcess...,
By Tracy Foote "Author: Kid's ROTH IRA Handbook:... (New York City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Growing Money: A Complete (and Completely Updated!) Investing Guide for Kids (Paperback)
The larger font size implies this book should be for ages eight to around twelve. If you purchase it for ages older than that, my guess is the child will feel like the book is too young for them. That is not to say that teenagers and adults cannot benefit from the information inside. This is a great investment book to begin understanding terms relating to different types of investments.
I like that special attention is given to the word investor itself, describing it as anyone who uses their money to make money. Thus, owning a simple savings account would make you an investor. I think children will be proud to be able to claim, "I am an investor!" Responsibility and financial money management will sneak in as part of the learning package and children will be well on their way to a successful financial future. There are quizzes and trivia facts throughout the book which make it fun and maintain children's interest. The book goes into detail explaining stocks, mutual funds, and bonds, addresses the fact that personality plays a role in investing, discusses how everyone has a different investment style, what sets a stock price, the bulls and the bears, and more. The last chapter challenges children to play an investment game. Children pretend they have $10,000 with the objective being to make as much as they can in six months. Charts are provided for tracking stocks and a portfolio value. I hope parents or teachers actually take the time to complete this last part with their children as nothing beats hands on experience.

At a time when young people hear increasingly more about the importance of saving money and avoiding too much credit card debt, this revised version of Growing Money can help them to make smart choices about the different ways in which they can save and invest their money.
This helpful guide begins with some interesting facts about money, including the origin of piggy banks, the cost of printing dollar bills and different coins, and the value of bills that the Federal Reserve shreds everyday ($160 million!). Most of the book then covers the basics about different savings and investment options, including savings accounts, certificates, stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Readers can even take a short quiz to get a sense of their tolerance of risk and their knowledge of the stock market. The closing material provides some tips on choosing amongst the different options in order to achieve one's investment objectives. The clear exposition and real world examples work well to engage readers while they navigate through important concepts in banking and finance. Although gaining financial literacy may not strike young people as an objective they necessarily want to pursue, this book will help them to see more clearly the need for and benefits of sound investment choices.
