4.0 out of 5 stars Unfailing Interest
This is a book to attract anyone interested in stories from New Orleans in the pre-WW2 days to WW2 Navy days on a destroyer in the Pacific, as told by Alvin Gottschall in letters to his daughter. Read how one ship was involved in most of the battles yet came out alive and well. All it picked up was a few scratches, lots of experience and great humor. Enjoy, enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Unique and warm view of a New Orleans from the past.
The author's approach of telling the story of his life for his daughter so that she will be able to see his life through his letter is an insight way of passing on his experiences of the New Orleans of the time. Much history and even names tell of a growing community and of local color. Nice job.
